Job description

Location: Hickory, NC

Position Summary:

The assistant track & field coach reports to the director of track & field and provides coaching expertise, leadership, management, and administration for all aspects of a competitive NCAA program, resulting in a positive and beneficial intercollegiate experience for student-athletes. The successful candidate will prioritize academic integrity and a commitment to student-athlete success.

Essential Responsibilities and Position Accountabilities:
  1. Provide leadership, organization, and supervision for all practices and varsity contests in conjunction with the head coach.
  2. Organize and implement a successful recruiting program that attracts academically and athletically gifted prospects, with a focus on retention, degree completion, and academic success.
  3. Conduct all program activities within NCAA, conference, athletic department, and university rules and regulations.
  4. Foster an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect among staff, coaches, and student-athletes.
  5. Prioritize student-athlete safety and welfare in all program aspects.
  6. Manage team needs within the annual budget, reviewing all budget requests and fiscal needs.
  7. Schedule team travel, practices, and contests in accordance with policies and NCAA bylaws under the direction of the head coach.
  8. Ensure student-athlete eligibility compliance with governing rules.
  9. Maintain positive relationships with university staff and departmental personnel to ensure an efficient program.
  10. Build and maintain relationships with parents, alumni, and supporters to promote a positive athletic department image.
  11. Participate in athletic department meetings and rules education sessions.
Qualifications:

Comprehensive understanding of NCAA athletics is required. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is necessary. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are essential. The candidate should demonstrate leadership, mentoring abilities, and a positive attitude, with an unwavering commitment to academic integrity, gender equity, student-athlete welfare, and NCAA and Title IX compliance.

Required Certifications, Licenses, and Clearances:
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • NCAA compliance background check
  • Completion of annual NCAA coach's exam
  • Certification in first aid, CPR, and AED

This position requires travel and variable working hours, including evenings and weekends.
