McPherson College invites applications for the position of Assistant Coach for Spirit Programs. Reporting to both the Director of Spirit Programs and the Director of Athletics, the Assistant Coach will support all aspects of the college’s Spirit Program while contributing to the holistic development of student-athletes into leaders both on and off the field. This position requires a dedicated and energetic individual with a passion for student mentorship, program development, and athletic excellence.
The Assistant Coach will be responsible for instructing and training student-athletes in cheer, dance, or other designated spirit team disciplines. Key responsibilities include assisting with game and practice preparations, mentoring student-athletes in their academic progress, and evaluating their athletic and academic performance. The position will support the planning and implementation of pre- and post-workout programming and contribute to fundraising and community service initiatives. The Assistant Coach will also participate in recruiting, retaining, and supporting the graduation of high-quality student-athletes who align with the mission of McPherson College and the spirit of the athletic program.
In addition to these duties, the Assistant Coach is expected to uphold and follow all institutional, KCAC, and NAIA rules and guidelines. Administrative responsibilities may be assigned by the Director of Athletics or Director of Spirit Programs as needed. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual who communicates effectively and demonstrates strong organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills. A commitment to professionalism, integrity, and excellence is essential.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required, with prior coaching experience or collegiate-level spirit squad participation strongly preferred. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to lead and mentor students, work collaboratively within an athletics department, and manage multiple responsibilities effectively. The ideal candidate will also have experience in event planning, recruitment, and community engagement, along with current or willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications.
