Job summary

Burns & McDonnell seeks an Assistant Transmission Engineer to assist licensed engineers in creating designs for overhead and underground transmission lines. You will help develop drawings, review CAD outputs, and support field inspections through project delivery in Columbus area.

The role emphasizes collaboration, methodical problem solving, and proficiency with CAD tools, BIM/Revit, and civil/structural analysis software. Candidates should be legally eligible to work in the United States.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of civil/structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and strong critical thinking.
• Proficient computer skills (MS Office).
• Basic CAD/engineering tools: AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, organization and problem-solving.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineers in Training (EIT) preferred.
• 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Campus or community involvement preferred.
• Legal authorization to work permanently in the country of location.

Responsibilities

• Assists in transmission line design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assists with modifying and reviewing production drawings for 69-500 kV transmission lines.
• Assists in designing line components including plan/profile drawings and foundation diagrams.
• Apply basic civil/structural engineering concepts per project needs.
• Assist in compiling project data, studies and reports.
• Assist in correcting drawings across CAD software under senior engineers.
• Support client presentations, shop drawing review and contract administration.
• Participate in field inspections, measurements or calculations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Description

The Assistant Transmission Engineer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including underground and overhead high voltage transmission lines. The Assistant Transmission Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission line plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.

• Assists in the transmission line design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assists with modifying and reviewing production drawings for a variety of projects involving high voltage (69-500kV) transmission lines.
• Assists in designing transmission line components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers including plan and profile drawings, structure load diagrams and foundation drawings.
• Applies basic knowledge of commonly used civil and structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the civil/structural engineering services industry.
• Assists with research and compiles project related data as required by the project managers. Assists with compiling studies and reports.
• Assists with correcting and updating drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.
• Assists with client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for the design of high voltage transmission lines.
• Assists in performing field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized, accredited program. ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
• Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge in standard civil/structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD), and civil/structural analysis programs.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.

Compensation

$75,000.00-110,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
