The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system comprises 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed extending 125 miles north and west of the City.
The position falls under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations, responsible for the operation, maintenance, and protection of New York City’s drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems, as well as the protection of waterways and natural drainage (wetlands). The Bureau also oversees the approval and inspection of water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and authorized contractors, and manages the approval and inspection of public and private construction projects related to water and sewer systems.
We are seeking a motivated Assistant Civil Engineer to review complex engineering submittals across NYC to assess impacts on water and sewer facilities. As part of the Site Connection Unit, successful candidates will influence project design by analyzing hydraulic components, reading architectural, mechanical, plumbing, and structural drawings, and coordinating with professionals and the construction industry to secure sewer connections following DEP rules and regulations. Coordination with other city agencies will also be essential to understand project requirements and regulatory compliance.
