Job summary

Scott County is seeking an Assistant Attorney to represent and advise the County on legal matters and to represent the State in civil court. Under general supervision, the position prepares cases, writes, reviews, and files pleadings for criminal prosecution and advises and trains law enforcement.

The role requires Juris Doctorate, Iowa license, and ability to handle a wide range of civil and quasi-criminal matters, including negotiations, trial preparation, and providing sound legal opinions to

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate degree is required.
• Must possess an Iowa Law license and be in good standing with the Iowa Supreme Court.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Responsibilities

• Litigates civil cases in State and Federal courts.
• Advises and provides legal opinions to the county board and elected officials.
• Negotiates and drafts 28E agreements, MOUs, and contracts.
• Attends hearings on behalf of the State.
• Performs legal research and stays current with civil law.
• Prepares evidence and develops trial strategies; meets with witnesses to prepare questions.
• Schedules and attends depositions.
• Provides law enforcement training as requested.
• Demonstrates County PRIDE in actions.
