Job summary

The City of Fort Worth’s City Attorney’s Office is seeking an Assistant City Attorney II who will partner with multiple departments to handle property interests for City projects, including eminent domain matters. This in-house role focuses on condemnation work, general civil litigation, and providing excellent legal service to a growing city.

Minimum qualifications include a Juris Doctorate, Texas bar license, and five years of relevant legal experience with trial exposure.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible legal experience, including relevant trial experience.
  • Possession of a license from the Supreme Court of Texas to practice.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing files for condemnation, preparing petitions, arranging and representing the City in special commissioners’ hearings.
  • Preparing the condemnation case for trial; and conducting bench/jury trials.
  • Conducting research, analysis, and writing to draft legal opinions for assigned legal issues related to condemnation; utilizing a variety of resources for research, including computerized legal data bases and reference materials
  • Handling notices; conducting written discovery; attending and taking depositions; presenting oral arguments; negotiating settlements; and monitoring general compliance with local, state and federal law

An Assistant City Attorney II position is available with the Fort Worth City Attorney’s Office. position will partner with multiple departments, including the Real Property Management, the Water Department, and Transportation & Public Works.

The City is growing rapidly and as a result needs property interests for various City projects such as roads, sidewalks, water and sewer lines, and parks. While the City most often is able to negotiate with proper owners to purchase the interests it seeks, it is sometimes necessary to acquire property through eminent domain. Therefore, the City seeks a condemnation lawyer to assist with these acquisitions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible legal experience, including relevant trial experience
  • Possession of a license from the Supreme Court of Texas to practice
Preferred Qualifications
  • Municipal law experience
  • Some experience filing condemnation petitions, representing clients at special commissioners’ hearings and litigating condemnation cases is preferred. However, candidates with general civil litigation experience will be considered
The Assistant City Attorney II - Job Responsibilities Include
  • Reviewing files for condemnation, preparing petitions, arranging and representing the City in special commissioners’ hearings
  • Preparing the condemnation case for trial; and conducting bench/jury trials
  • Conducting research, analysis, and writing to draft legal opinions for assigned legal issues related to condemnation; utilizing a variety of resources for research, including computerized legal data bases and reference materials

Sedentary Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met

Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Background Check

Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions in the last 10 years, Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication in the last 10 years, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and ALL Family Violence Convictions regardless of class
