Job description

The Shenandoah University Spirit Squad is searching for an Assistant Cheer Team Coach. This is a one-year contract stipend position located on our main campus in Winchester, VA.

This position reports to the Director of Spirit Squad and the Head Cheer Team Coach. The Assistant Cheer Team Coach will assist the Head Cheer Team Coach in all aspects of the Shenandoah University Spirit Squad’s Cheer Team. Responsibilities include coaching, recruitment, player development, and fundraising efforts for the program.

Responsibilities
  1. Work with the Director of Spirit Squad, Head Cheer Team Coach, instructional staff, and student leadership to ensure each student achieves success in a positive and inclusive environment.
  2. Attend Cheer Camp, practices, team dinners, and performances.
  3. Assist the Head Cheer Team Coach with game and practice preparations, including retention efforts and instruction of fundamental techniques.
  4. Coordinate team building and bonding activities.
  5. Lead Cheer Team Tryouts in fall and spring.
  6. Maintain a safe practice environment and plan effective practices.
  7. Manage fundraising efforts for the Cheer Team.
  8. Manage equipment needs and communicate requirements for student success.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Spirit Squad and Head Cheer Team Coach.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience instructing Cheer at high school or college level preferred.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and maintaining team pages.
  • Management, leadership, and communication skills required.
Camp Dates and Practice Times
  • Cheer Camp: July 19-20
  • Veteran Cheer Team Members move in: August 25, 2025
  • Practices: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-8 am
  • Friday evening team dinners and bonding events as scheduled
  • Saturday football and basketball games as scheduled
  • One or two weekend Cheer Competitions between February and April
