Job description

• Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant Athletic Trainer provides support and assistance for all aspects of the Sports Medicine program.

• Supervises Others: YES. Student Workers/Interns

Essential Duties:

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

• Represents the College honestly and abides by the colleges and Sports Medicine protocols and procedures.

• Keep updated and abide by Federal, State and County laws as it pertains to athletic trainers. Also, keep updated and abide by the recommendations and guidelines put forth by the NCAA and NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association).

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in the administrative duties of the sports medicine program which includes budget management, inventory management, training room maintenance, assure sports medicine protocols and procedures are being followed, etc.

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in coordinating and implementing pre-physical screenings, baseline testing, Drug Education, etc.

• Assist coaches in developing and maintaining an effective program of physical conditioning designed to develop strength and endurance

• Represents Elmira College at various events, for example Admissions Fairs, Alumni events, etc.

• Maintains confidentiality of information exposed to in the course of business regarding Assist in student athlete medical & injury documentation and providing accident report forms and insurance forms to the business office for insurance purposes

• Communicate with the team orthopedic surgeons, Clarke Health Center physicians and nurses, and other area physicians and dentists about athletes’ injury status and progress

• Communicate with coaches about athletes’ progress and Sports Medicine issues that might affect the coach and their team

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in the development of Sports Medicine policies, procedures, and protocols that follow the guidelines of the NCAA, NATA, Team Physicians, and Elmira College which also follow the Federal and State of New York laws.

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer and Team Physician in coordinating and implementing the Concussion Management program

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in coordinating, updating and presenting the NCAA mandated Drug Education and Sports Medicine Informational program for student-athletes

• Cover scheduled team practices and games as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer Travel with teams as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer

• Injury evaluation and referral of the student athletes

• Assist and supervise in the pre-athletic training intern program

• Design and monitor treatment and rehabilitation programs for injured athletes

• Provide pre-participation taping, padding, strapping, stretching, etc.

• Keep up with the latest trends and research in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training by reading journals and books and attending symposiums

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in CPR and First Aid instruction for athletic department staff, and other members of the college community, students, supervisors or other staff

• Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director and/or the Head Athletic Trainer

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
  • Certified as an Athletic Trainer by the NATABOC
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Ability to effectively communicate both within and outside the College including, but not limited to, student athletes, parents, recruits, coaches, civic and business leaders required
  • Ability to work as a support individual within a group setting
  • Ability to provide effective leadership to student athletes and Sports Medicine Student Assistants to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance
  • Must possess the physical skills necessary to perform their assigned duties
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Current certification in CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer or BLS
  • Certified as an American Red Cross CPR and First Aid instructor (preferred)
