Summary

The Assistant Center Director reports to the Center Director and ensures that the support services of the program including nutrition and food services, transportation, safety and security of the program are managed effectively and in compliance with Head Start Standards and Federal, State, and Agency policies. You may be assigned to provide center-wide oversight in the absence of the Center Director.

You will directly supervise Cooks, Assistant Cooks, Custodians, and Program Aides and oversee scheduling, performance management, and professional development of employees at the center. You will work closely with the Center Director, teaching and classroom staff to contribute to the overall success of the program, and may be reassigned to various centers as necessary for program operations.

As a front-line representative of Save the Children, you are required to ensure the safety and security of children and families that you come in contact with and embody the agency values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.

As a Save the Children employee in contact with children routinely, you are expected to prevent child abuse in every situation by applying mental awareness, good practice, and training to minimize risk. You must take positive steps to protect children who may be subjects of concern, report and respond to any instances of child abuse, and promote training and awareness around child safeguarding obligations.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
  • Operational Support and Compliance
  • Assist the Center Director in maintaining quality teaching and learning environments, attend case coordination meetings, and fully integrate services.
  • Work with the Center Director to plan and equip indoor and outdoor areas to meet children’s developmental and safety needs within budget and standards.
  • Assist with arrangements and schedules of Program Aides/substitutes, monitor staff schedules, organize family and staff work days, and ensure safety checks and licensing requirements are completed timely.
  • Support compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, participate in safety drills, and update safety logs.
  • Implement best practices in early education programming with staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings for planning and service integration.
  • Ensure compliance with program evaluation and Head Start standards.
  • Maintain filing, tracking, and documentation systems, monitor staff attendance, verify timesheets, and secure employee files.
  • Support fiscal management, assist with procurement and inventory, and participate in cost allocation.
  • Monitor Child Plus data input for children and families.
Supervision and Training
  • Supervise content area managers/specialists/coordinators, plan and implement staff training, and conduct performance reviews.
  • Organize staff meetings, review and approve employee timesheets.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in early childhood education, child development, or human services, plus at least two (2) years relevant experience.
  • One year supervisory experience preferred, along with experience in financial management and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of infant/toddler and preschool programs, Head Start Standards, and best practices.
  • Understanding of business practices including supervision, accounts payable, inventory, and risk management.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to oversee program compliance with regulations.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Physical ability to perform medium to heavy physical work and repetitive motions, keyboarding, and computer use.

Pre-employment requirements include background checks, health requirements, and possibly operating a motor vehicle with a valid driver’s license. Preference given to current or former Head Start/Early Head Start parents if qualified.

Preferred Experience
  • Supervisory experience and financial management preferred.
  • Previous Head Start/Early Head Start experience preferred.
