Job summary

Ambler Metals is seeking an Assistant Camp Manager for the Bornite camp in Alaska to work with the Camp Manager, Site Manager and team leads ensuring safe, productive operations.

The role encompasses enforcing safety policies, incident response, supervising staff and contractors, and coordinating logistics, inventory, and reporting. The position follows a 20 days on-site, 10 days off-site rotation with on-site housing and meals provided.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Specialized training or education in camp operations is preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Knowledge of fuel handling regulations and procedures is essential.
  • Ability to develop formal reports, documents and JHAs.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce Site Safety and Environmental Policies and ensure compliance.
  • Provide operational support to Camp Manager and UKMP team.
  • Maintain a culture of accountability and address hazards.
  • Coordinate daily operations with Site Operations teams and Admin.
  • Monitor KPIs and report deficiencies to the Camp Manager.
  • Oversee helicopter and fixed-wing operations logistics.
  • Ensure proper loading/unloading of charter aircraft and fuel inventory.
  • Assist with room assignments, check-ins, and staff housing logistics.
  • Report safety, environmental, and security incidents promptly.
  • Contribute to project updates for company stakeholders.

Job description

The Assistant Camp Manager works closely with the Camp Manager, Site Manager and team leads to ensure the safe and productive operation of the Bornite camp.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
Safety
  • Implement and enforce the Site Safety and Environmental Policies
  • Ensure personnel compliance with the Site Safety and Environmental Policies
  • Assume the required Incident Management or Emergency Response Team role during emergencies according to the Ambler Crisis and Emergency Management Plan
  • Immediately intervene when safety hazards are observed
  • Conduct employee task training
  • Develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with team leads and managers.
  • Identify and mitigate safety hazards
  • Conduct daily toolbox meetings with the Site Operations teams
  • Assist with safety audits of project operations
  • Assist with safety related paperwork (near misses and incident reports)
  • Assist with baggage checks of incoming passengers to camp
Managerial
  • Comply with Ambler Metals Corporate Standards
  • Provide operational support to the Camp Manager and the UKMP management team
  • Establish and maintain a culture of accountability, encouraging the reporting of hazards and deficiencies
  • Uphold Ambler's respectful workplace culture. Intervene and address observed or reported instances of harassment
  • Recommend efficiencies, optimizations, and best practices to the Camp Manager
  • Develop and implement work plans
  • Ensure all personnel have received a camp orientation, including camp rules and safety procedures.
  • Assist with tracking, approval, and submittal of employee time to payroll
  • Monitor contractor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and report deficiencies to the Camp Manager
  • Ensure priority loading and unloading of charter aircraft
  • Manage daily inventory of fuel at site
  • Work closely with Site Operations teams (Admin, Catering, Mechanical, Heavy Equipment, Maintenance and House Keeping) to ensure tasks and resources are assigned appropriately
  • Assist the Admin team with room assignments and check-outs
Clerical
  • Maintain inventory control of supplies arriving at site.
  • Ensure sufficient and appropriate materials are being ordered
  • Order supplies through the Fairbanks-based expediting team
  • Maintain document control of inventory forms: JHAs, SOPs and HAZMAT shipping forms
Communication
  • Report all safety, environmental and security incidents to the company immediately. Complete incident reports
  • Participate in daily management meetings
  • Provide a report summarizing the daily tasks, deficiencies, and safety concerns to the Camp Manager by 5pm daily or more often, as necessary
  • Assist with providing project updates to company stakeholders
Qualifications
Education and Training
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Specialized training or education in a field of study related to camp operations
  • Valid Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fuel handling regulations and procedures
  • Knowledge of and ability to carry out safe remote operational procedures
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers and MS Office Suite
  • Ability to develop formal reports, documents and JHA's
  • Ability to deal tactfully with camp staff, contractors, and visitors
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Ability to take initiative in the case of an emergency
  • Ability to follow instructions effectively and in a timely manner
  • Ability to work for long periods in a remote location
  • Ability to obtain a first aid certificate
  • Ability to obtain OSHA certification
Experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience operating in remote mining or oil & gas camps
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience managing personnel
  • A minimum of 2 years managing helicopter and fixed wing operations
  • A minimum of 1 year working within a formal safety program at a Lead or above level
Working Conditions
  • Required to remain on-site throughout rotation; food and lodging is provided
  • Expected rotation is 20 days on site, 10 days off site inclusive of travel
  • Expected normal daily work hours are from 6:30am until 8:00pm
  • May be required to work in arctic conditions during the winter months
  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions (including snow, rain, wind as well as extremely warm or cold conditions) is common
  • Travel to site may be via small aircraft or boat. Travel on site and surrounding areas is by four-wheel drive and all-terrain vehicles and occasionally via helicopter

This is a seasonal position with a rotational schedule.
