Job description

Seeds of Peace is looking for an experienced Assistant Camp Director to ensure the smooth operation of Camp in the lead-up to Camp and onsite this summer. This person will be assisting the Camp Director in overseeing daily activities, staff, and camper experience. One of the key objectives for this year will be to understand the philosophies, architecture, and outcomes of Seeds of Peace Camp and programming. This role involves staff supervision and training, program planning, camper care and support, operational support, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all campers and staff members. The ideal candidate will be organized, proactive, and passionate about creating a positive, enriching environment for both staff and campers alike as well as personally committed to the mission and values of Seeds of Peace. Camp leadership and staff management, experience with youth from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, and a commitment to conflict transformation and dialogue practices are required. This role is remote leading up to camp, however in person during Camp orientation and while Camp is in session (July 1-30). Housing is provided while camp is in session, but not year round.

Camp Leadership and Coordination

  • Use an adaptive leadership approach to create an environment where experts from the Camp leadership team step in at different points in time, using their knowledge to drive decision-making and lead the team when relevant.
  • Build strong relationships with the leadership team to foster a culture of shared leadership and accountability, ensuring that individuals at all levels feel ownership over their roles, driving the collective success of the camp experience
    Develop communication processes before and at Camp that allow for input and feedback from relevant staff to support clear decision-making and ownership of responsibilities.

Camper Care & Support

  • Ensure campers' safety and well-being, including emotional and physical health.
  • Address any concerns or issues that arise with campers, acting as a point of contact for both campers and parents.
  • Supervise daily camper routines, including meals, activities, and downtime.
  • Foster an inclusive, positive environment that encourages personal growth, teamwork, and respect.

Compliance and Operational Support

  • Oversees ACA accreditation process
  • Help ensure that camp facilities are properly maintained, clean, organized, and ready for participants.
  • Assist with record-keeping, including incident reports, and medical documentation

Staff Supervision & Training

  • Helps coordinate hiring, travel and payment processes for all Camp staff and all HR-related hiring procedures, coordinating on a timely basis with colleagues in Admin and Finance
  • Provide ongoing support, mentorship, and guidance to staff throughout the camp season.
  • Monitor staff performance and assist in conducting evaluations.
  • Lead staff meetings and ensure clear communication between the Camp Director and the rest of the camp team.

Program Planning, Coordination & Impact

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director to develop, plan, and execute age-appropriate activities and programming.
  • Work closely with the Camp Director to communicate camp policies, activities, and any special announcements to both staff and campers.
  • Oversee the implementation of activities, ensure that daily schedules are followed, and that activities are engaging, safe, and educational.
  • Provides input on monitoring and evaluation

Safety & Risk Management

  • Support the Camp Director in ensuring that all camp activities adhere to safety guidelines and best practices.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies or crises and ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Monitor staff and camper behavior, intervening when necessary to ensure a safe and respectful camp environment.

Communication + Development

  • Participates in external relations related to the camp, including press visits to the camp, press interviews, and engagement with various camp-related stakeholders include relevant Board committees
  • Works with development and communications staff to support donor engagement related to the Camp and programming, donor stewardship at Camp, Board and VIP visits to the Camp, supporter visits to the Camp, in-kind donor prospecting and solicitation, and impact reporting.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in camp management or a related role, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Trained on all legal aspects of youth supervision and responsibility, including Mandatory Reporting
  • Ability to lead a diverse team and build an inclusive work environment
  • Experience working with young people
  • Experience with the American Camp Association Accreditation process
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment, all-encompassing environment
  • Ability to spend summer months at Camp while program is in session
  • Ability to work virtually with staff based overseas
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work across and adapt to many different constituencies
  • Ability to speak publicly and motivate young people in accordance with our mission and values
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Experience with child development, youth programming, and conflict resolution.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to Camp)
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic, outdoor setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, recreation, social work, or related field.
  • Experience with specialized camp programs (e.g., arts, sports, nature).
  • Leadership certification or other relevant training

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time, seasonal position (In-person July 1-30, 2025, a must) potentially leading to a full-time, year-round role
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Evening and weekend hours required during Camp
