Assistant Bursar
Department: Business Office
Location: Columbia, MO
Type: Staff, Full-time
Pay: $49,201 to $54,000 per year (Pay range may vary based on geographic location)

Job Summary:
The Assistant Bursar operates as a full functional backup to the Bursar, trained in all Bursar activities and responsibilities, and during the absence of the Bursar acts in the best interest of the College assuming the role of the Bursar. Provides direct support to the Bursar in handling administrative and accounting duties related to all aspects of student account billing and activity within the Business Office. Responsibilities include the management of billing and collection of general student accounts receivable, coordination and collection of 3rd-party receivables, managing miscellaneous charges to student accounts from college departments and book vendors and understanding and supporting the campus e-Commerce payment system and payment plans.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission and values, and contributes to the development of the Business Office Department.
  • Practice superior customer service.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Display respect and civility to all constituencies in all communications.
  • Attend work timely and on a regular basis during the established hours of operation; work additional hours as business necessitates.
  • Knowledgeable of all functions and work flows within the Bursar office, providing direct backup support to Bursar.
  • Responsible for timely billing of all students to ensure timely payments.
  • Required adjustments to tuition charges.
  • Responsible for all third-party billing and payment application.
  • Responsible for application of all miscellaneous charges to AR Accounts for library fines and fees, parking fines and fees, book charges from third party vendors, application fees, declaration for candidacy fees, and other miscellaneous charges and reconcile to sources of charges.
  • Responsible for the management of the college e-Commerce functions to include, but not limited to, payment plan administration, cashiering functionality, electronic billings and related interface with the student accounting software.
  • Prepares reports and provides documentation to departments and/or students, as required or requested and prepares documentation for related audits, internal or external.
  • Processes account adjustments for students cross-enrolled between college programs/campuses.
  • Processes account adjustments related to administrative drops and withdrawals.
  • Assists students and departmental personnel with account-related questions and dispute resolution.
  • Responsible for coordination of transfers of financial aid to student accounts.
  • Acts in the best interest of the College when the Bursar is on short absence (for example, vacation, sick leave, professional development, etc.).
  • Interact with Bursar and other College departments to create innovative enhancements for business processes and productivity improvements.

Required Core Competencies and Professional Experience:
  • Ability to fluently read, write, and understand the English language.
  • Proficiency with the following, but not limited to: active listening; speaking; writing; critical thinking; judgment and decision making; monitoring; reading comprehension; time management; coordination; and management of personnel resources.
  • Proficiency for using a variety of computer and technology-related software and equipment, including Microsoft Office products and database systems.
  • Proficiency in using web-based technologies, including database systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, with or without direct supervision.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Three or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Prior experience working in a business office.
  • Prior experience working with student accounts.

Required Level of Education: Bachelor’s degree
