Town of Berlin is seeking an Assistant Building Official to oversee and enforce building codes across the city under the Building Official. You will review plans, inspect structures, and manage permit applications to ensure compliance with the International Building Code as adopted in Connecticut.
Ideal candidates hold the required certification, have strong knowledge of building codes, and are proficient with common software.

Under the general supervision of the Building Official, establishes and enforces building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and energy code requirements to promote the health and safety of the people of Berlin by reviewing, developing, adopting and administering the State of Connecticut Building Code. Assists in the review of plans and specifications submitted with building permit applications, inspects buildings, structures, plumbing and electrical installations, and enforces the International Building Code. In the absence of the Building Official, serves as the Department authority.
Certification as an Assistant Building Official is required. Must have a working knowledge of modern practices, principles, materials, tools, techniques and terminology used in building construction; have a working knowledge of inspection practices and techniques, and an understanding of the International Building Code as adopted by the State of Connecticut. Additional basic abilities of using computer software such as spreadsheets, word processing, email, building permit software are also required. Must maintain a valid Driver’s license. Must be prepared and capable of working in inclement weather conditions and other various conditions pertinent with job-site construction.
The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough or difficult surfaces, recurring stooping, climbing ladders and or scaffold, recurring stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and balancing on various surface areas. Lifting moderately heavy items weighing less than 25 pounds and may require occasional lifting of objects weighing more than 25 pounds. The work may require specific, but common physical characteristics and abilities such as mobility and dexterity. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves or shield. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distant vision, color vision, and depth perception. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various pieces of office equipment.
