The Torts Division, the largest division in the Washington Attorney General’s Office, represents the State agencies and State employees who do the hard work of serving the citizens of Washington when they are sued for damages. Attorneys in the Division, with support from professional staff, handle cases from inception through resolution, involving diverse clients and theories of liability, with continuous support, training, and development.

Assistant Attorney General – Role and Responsibilities

The Assistant Attorney General will be part of a collaborative team of attorneys, paralegals, and investigators located in Spokane, Washington, with telework opportunities in a hybrid work environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Representing the State in civil litigation in state and federal courts throughout Washington.
  • Managing cases from inception through resolution, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, motions, trial, and appellate work.
  • Working closely with investigative staff, client agencies, and risk managers.
  • Collaborating with other attorneys in the Torts Division and the Attorney General’s Office.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school (or completion of the Washington State Bar Association Rule 6 Law Clerk Program) and licensed to practice law in Washington State.
  • Five or more years of progressive legal experience, including a strong foundation in civil litigation.
  • Experience taking and defending depositions; handling an active civil motions practice; working with expert witnesses; engaging in alternative dispute resolution; appearing before state and/or federal courts; briefing and arguing cases on appeal; and interacting with high‑level client representatives.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; strong problem‑solving ability; excellent legal judgment; and the ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.
  • Commitment to public service and a background that demonstrates diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and communication styles.
  • Knowledge of Washington public sector litigation and torts law.
  • An active or pending application for admission to the Washington State bar.
