Job description

Shenandoah University’s Office of Athletics is accepting applications for an Assistant Athletic Trainer. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

Responsibilities:

  • Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems. Assessment, evaluation skills, and working with other healthcare professionals will be required.
  • Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Attention to Detail: Be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation using an electronic medical records system. Assist in coordinating and scheduling medical coverage for practices and events.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high-stress situations with student-athletes, medical professionals, staff, and families.
  • Must be able to organize, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

Specific Duties:

  • Provide onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses, including prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation.
  • Assess injury risk, perform ergonomic evaluations, coaching, self-care implementation, and promote overall wellness.
  • Document all student-athlete encounters electronically.
  • Coordinate and implement injury prevention programs tailored to each student-athlete.
  • Reduce injury risk through awareness, education, and prevention strategies.
  • Mentor students in the graduate athletic program and supervise students in the federal work-study program.
  • Follow the NATA Code of Ethics and comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Stay current on all Virginia state and national requirements for license renewal.
  • Comply with all University, ODAC, and NCAA bylaws and legislation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising head athletic trainer to support the athletic department and training department.
