Job summary

Cal State East Bay is seeking an Athletic Trainer I to support intercollegiate programs with medical coverage and rehabilitation for student-athletes. You will work evenings, weekends, and travel with teams as needed, maintaining certifications and professional standards.

Responsibilities include evaluating injuries, providing treatments, implementing prevention strategies, and coordinating rehab in partnership with the Head Athletic Trainer.

PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,482.00 per month to $5,464.00 per month (Step 1 to Step 11).

About the Position

This position will assist the Head Athletic Trainer in providing comprehensive medical care to intercollegiate student-athletes. Support the daily operations of the athletic training facility, including providing medical coverage for intercollegiate practices and competitions. Perform injury evaluations, administer treatments, implement proactive injury prevention strategies, and oversee rehabilitation programs. Maintain a professional workenvironment and foster positive working relationships with student-athletes, staff, and the campus community. Be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and travel with teams asneeded. Maintain all required athletic training certifications.

Responsibilities

Athletic training duties:

  • Assist with the daily operation of the athletic training facility and equipment, including providing medical coverage for intercollegiate athletic practices and competitions.
  • Perform injury evaluations under established protocols and in consultation with the Head Athletic Trainer, as appropriate.
  • Provide prescribed or established treatment for athletic injuries.
  • Implement proactive injury prevention strategies and assist in the rehabilitation and conditioning of athletes in collaboration with the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Communicate with coaches regarding the injury status, participation restrictions, and return-to-play progress of student-athletes consistent with established medical guidance.
  • Serve as first responder for assigned sport supervision and home events.

Administrative duties & other duties as assigned:

  • Assist in documenting injuries, completing injury reports and maintaining medical records/files.
  • Assist with the collection, organization, and maintenance of confidential medical and insurance records.

Responsibilities of the CSA include:

  • Report all alleged Clery Act Crimes in a timely manner.
  • Report any alleged Clery Act Crimes that are reported to the incumbent using the online CSA Reporting Form.
  • Complete annual training requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge: General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campus’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.

Abilities: Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Education: Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

License and Certifications: Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer. Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel as required.
  • Must successfully complete all required Campus Security Authority (CSA) training and maintain compliance with all required annual Clery Act training and reporting requirements.
