Position Overview
This position will coordinate medical care operations for select varsity sport programs and support the comprehensive coverage of all varsity student-athletes as a member of the Colgate Sports Medicine team.
Responsibilities
- Manage operational functions and strategies for assigned varsity sports, including prevention, care, rehabilitation, specialist referrals, and emergency management.
- Record and evaluate practice, treatment, and injury logs daily, communicating with relevant personnel.
- Maintain student-athlete medical files regarding recovery and symptoms.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, strength & conditioning staff, coaching staff, academic advisors, and athletic administrators about student-athlete status.
- Complete and submit insurance claims; communicate with insurance companies.
- Manage inventory and facilities.
- Supervise medical coverage for intercollegiate athletic events, including travel during the season.
- Coordinate with the Sports Medicine team to ensure coverage of all varsity activities, including outside of assigned sports when necessary.
- Communicate with university physicians for assigned sports.
- Make independent decisions regarding athlete participation, rehabilitation, return-to-play, and weather-related activities.
- Conduct pre-participation screenings, including medical history collection, anthropometric measurements, musculoskeletal screening, and concussion testing.
- Ensure compliance with clinical care standards under the supervision of the University Physician.
- Collect NCAA and university medical forms as per policies.
- Supervise student assistants, including hiring, scheduling, evaluation, and training, with the discretion to terminate employment.
- Report injuries to medical staff and NCAA as required.
- Maintain relationships with Strength and Conditioning staff to promote athlete safety.
- Manage a budget, making independent decisions on purchases and expenditures.
- Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, university policies, and professional standards (NATA).
- Model leadership and professional behaviors to student-athletes.
- Adhere to the Jeanne Clery Act as a Campus Security Authority, reporting crimes as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required:
- NATABOC certification and NYS License (eligible).
- Minimum two years of related experience.
- Excellent communication skills and knowledge of NCAA and university regulations.
- Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred:
- Experience in college athletics or as a certified Athletic Trainer.
- Additional certifications (e.g., PES, CSCS, Graston).
- Master’s Degree.
