Position Summary

Sports Medicine at St. Andrew's is not only about the treatment of athletic injuries, but also the holistic care, development, and growth of each student on campus. The athletic training facility at St. Andrew's is a hub of energy and excitement every day before sports. The positivity and enthusiasm of the athletic trainers set the tone for many of the athletes for the afternoon and work in concert with the coach/mentor model of the school. Our work with the St. Andrew's athletes goes beyond the opportunity to heal, to also connect and mirror the transformative process of the classrooms, sports fields, and dorms. The assistant athletic trainer should fully embrace the role of caregiver and mentor.

St. Andrew's is an associate member school in the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association and a member of the Delaware Independent School Conference.

This position will report to the director of athletics and work collaboratively with a sports medicine doctor. The incumbent must be prompt, dependable, and flexible, providing sideline medical coverage for practice and games.

This position will work approximately 20 hours per week beginning August 18, 2026, until May 31, 2027. Typical hours are 3:15 PM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Other shifts outside of the typical hours may occasionally be necessary based on game schedules and as needed on Saturdays.

Breaks include a fall long weekend (4 days), Thanksgiving break (9 days), winter break (18 days), a winter long weekend (4 days), spring break (15 days), and a spring long weekend (4 days).

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Injury Prevention
  • Identifying and mitigating risks to prevent injuries, including implementing safety protocols approved by the director of athletics.
  • Providing education on proper rehabilitation, exercises, and training techniques, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
  • Demonstrate of become familiar with various DIAA Sports Medicine guidelines, such as the Heat Restriction Policy and Concussion Management Guidelines.
• Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis
  • Assessing and diagnosing injuries and illnesses, utilizing various methods and tools within the scope of your education and DE state license and recommending referral to medical professionals when necessary.
  • Discuss all clinical assessments with the director of athletics before progressing with treatment.
• Immediate and Emergency Care
  • Providing immediate on-field or on-site care for injuries and illnesses, including first aid, stabilization, and the potential activation of EMS.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and comfort with St. Andrew's approved Emergency Action Plans and communication with all roles and personnel involved with our system of care
• Treatment and Rehabilitation
  • Implement treatment plans and rehabilitation programs to restore injured athletes’ abilities to participate, utilizing modalities, exercises, manual therapy, and other therapeutic techniques.
  • Communicate, coordinate, and progress all treatment and rehabilitation plans with the approval of the director of athletics.
• Organization and Administration
  • Maintain documentation of all assessments and treatments.
  • Maintain the assessment and care of injured visiting athletes are communicated to the athlete’s coaching staff, the athlete’s parent(s), and the visiting team’s athletic trainer.

Professional Responsibility

• Maintain ethical standards, adhere to professional guidelines, and engage in continuing education to stay current in the field.
• Maintain professional boundaries with all student athletes to establish the essential foundation for building trusting and respectful relationships.

Job Requirements

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in training, sports medicine, exercise science, kinesiology, or related field.
• Must be BOC certified, possess Delaware state athletic training licensure, and be CPR certified.
• Must be able to lift 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects like coolers or weight room equipment.
• Medium strength is required to position athletes for examination. May assist athletes as needed in ways such as, but not limited to, helping them on and off field, the exam table.
• Must be comfortable driving a golf cart to the sports field to take medical supplies and/or water coolers.
