Essential Job Duties

The Center for Geospatial Analytics is seeking a highly qualified instructor to join our academic programs at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor (non-tenure). The candidates we are seeking are forward-looking instructors with a strong background in both foundational geospatial concepts and skills alongside modern approaches, such as open-source and cloud-based/native platforms, WebGIS, GeoAI, Geospatial Data Science, and a strong interest in innovative geospatial pedagogy and dedication to student success.

This is a full-time, 9-month professional track faculty position with an initial contract of three (3) years, with opportunities for multiple renewals and advancement based on annual performance reviews and progress. The Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor will play an instrumental role in developing and delivering high-quality courses for the Center's highly-ranked academic programs.

In this role, you will shape students' learning experiences through 15-18 credit hours of teaching each academic year across the Fall and Spring terms. You will teach courses within the existing curriculum while also having the opportunity to develop new courses that reflect your expertise, interests, and emerging needs in the field of geospatial analytics.

Teaching responsibilities will include:
  • An undergraduate- or graduate-level introductory GIS course (3 credit hours)
  • The undergraduate Minor Capstone Course, Geospatial Analytics in Practice (1 credit hour; Fall and Spring)
  • Two additional undergraduate courses, or a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses, based on program needs and the candidate's interests. Potential topics for new courses include, but are not limited to, Geospatial AI, Geospatial Ethics, AI and Data Literacy in GIS, Environmental/Public Health/Hydrological Applications, and Geospatial Communication and Cartography.
Service and engagement responsibilities include:
  • Participation in the Center's academic community through student advising and mentoring, including serving as an academic advisor for a portion of MGIST students
  • Participation in committees in support of program-level initiatives and outreach, as requested
