The Department of Performing Arts and Technology offers a variety of technique, ensemble, and lecture courses. The Department has a growing major in Music Technology and also provides academic minors in Dance Studies, Dance Performance and Choreography, Music Studies, Music Performance, and Arts Entrepreneurship. The department has a full complement of course offerings, musical ensembles, and dance companies with a national reputation that attracts students from across the campus. More information about the department can be found at https://performingartstech.dasa.ncsu.edu/Over the next year, the Department of Performing Arts and Technology will transition from the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA) to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS). The transition will create new opportunities for collaboration and closer connections with related disciplines while providing an academic structure that supports the department's continued growth and success. Candidates joining the department will be part of this exciting transition and contribute to the department's continued development within CHASS.

The Bachelor of Science in Music Technology is an interdisciplinary degree between Music and Technology degrees (e.g., Electrical and Computer Engineering). Students gain musical training through a musicianship core, applied musical instrument study, and a musical ensemble study. In parallel, students receive technical training through their core Math, Science, and technical concentration courses. Lastly, students combine these two through practical Music Technology courses that train students on the technical concepts for music and audio. Students receive training in the fundamentals of Acoustics, Psychoacoustics, Analog & Digital Audio technology, Musical Technology design, and algorithms. The plan concludes with the students fulfilling their core requirements, a senior design capstone project, and a music recital that has a technology component.

This plan will prepare students for a career designing and building electronic musical instruments, professional audio devices, sound systems for consumer devices, and software for music production and consumption.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Performing Arts and Technology at North Carolina State University seeks applications for a tenure-track, nine-month, full-time Assistant/Associate Professor in Music Technology. The successful candidate will play an integral role in the delivery and expansion of the Music Technology program that operates in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program (45%) and teach courses (45%) in musical acoustics and psychoacoustics, sound isolation, recording, mixing, audio digital signal processing, audio effects development, sound design, video game audio, audio/musical electronics, and/or additional music technology areas associated with the candidate's expertise. The successful candidate will also assist in student advising, serve on department committees, and assist in the management and maintenance of the classroom and lab technology for hands‑on experimental learning projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience at the university level
• PhD or DMA in music, music technology, computer science, electrical engineering or other related field
• Experience and/or credentialing in both music and engineering
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with educational partners, business/industry, or external agencies
• The ability to lead interdisciplinary programs requiring faculty collaboration
