The U.S. Coast Guard Academy invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Civil Engineering. The successful candidate will teach in-person Civil Engineering courses, mentor undergraduates, supervise capstone design projects, and conduct scholarly research in geotechnical, structural, or environmental areas.

Description

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Civil Engineering. The desired start date is August 9, 2027.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is a highly selective federal military college that provides a rigorous undergraduate program and is committed to building a faculty of passionate teacher-scholars who collaborate to provide a multi-disciplinary and hands-on approach to learning and leadership development.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) has a robust tradition of preparing graduates to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard and the civil engineering industry. Graduates progress through an intensive four-year ABET accredited curriculum to understand civil and environmental engineering principles and acquire the technical expertise and critical thinking skills needed for infrastructure planning, design, construction, and management. The department has supplied the Coast Guard's Civil Engineering community with the talent to sustain Coast Guard operations through lifecycle management, stewardship of shore infrastructure, and environmental compliance.

This is an appointment in the excepted service as a tenure track faculty member on a 10-month work schedule for an initial period not to exceed three years, with extensions and a permanent appointment contingent on successful progress and tenure reviews. The first two years of appointment to federal service is a trial period. The work schedule is full-time. This position is not eligible for telework and not eligible for remote work. All teaching is done in person. Relocation expenses are authorized. Occasional travel is required.

Salary offers may be made outside of the listed range for exceptional candidates.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks applicants for a tenure track faculty position. We seek a colleague with potential to teach courses in Civil Engineering, advise students, lead undergraduate research, perform scholarly research, and contribute service to the institution and profession. The selectee will teach in-person classes during Fall and Spring semesters and may be expected to teach during summer term. Remote or virtual teaching is not an option. Major duties include:

Teach classes and run laboratories in Civil Engineering and other related engineering programs; typically, between nine to twelve contact hours/week per semester.

Mentor and develop undergraduate students as they begin their journey into Coast Guard careers and follow-on service in the Civil Engineering profession.

Advise senior-level capstone design projects and undergraduate research in Civil Engineering.

Perform scholarly research in the Civil Engineering Specialty Area of Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering or Environmental Engineering.

Perform rank-appropriate service activities for the Department, School, Institution, and Profession.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Doctoral candidates in an All But Dissertation (ABD) status must include a letter in the application from the applicant's major professor or thesis advisor attesting that the candidate will complete all requirements for the doctoral degree before July 15, 2027.

Preferred Qualifications

We encourage all interested and qualified candidates to apply, even if they don't meet every preferred qualification outlined below.

• Teaching
  Experience teaching undergraduate students, including teaching assistant experience, in the Civil Engineering Specialty Area of Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Structural Engineering. Ability and intention to employ evidence-based teaching methodologies. Ability to lead student-centered undergraduate research projects in Civil & Environmental Engineering or cross-disciplinary topics.
• Professional Skills and Experience
  Professional experience in Civil Engineering, specifically in the Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering or Environmental Engineering specialty areas. Consideration will be given to candidates engaged in these activities as a Professional Engineer. Professional experience in other Civil Engineering related disciplines, or interdisciplinary work that compliments Civil Engineering. Consideration will be given to candidates who can articulate how their experience and expertise will broaden, strengthen, and enhance the Civil Engineering curriculum and support the program's educational mission. Record of scholarly accomplishment commensurate with career stage, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations at regional, national, and/or international conferences, and active participation and leadership in professional societies, disciplinary organization, and other scholarly activities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Leadership and Mentorship
  Demonstrated experience mentoring and advising students, supporting their academic and professional development. Demonstrated experience consistent with a full commitment to the Coast Guard's core values which includes serving as a positive role model through exemplary leadership, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
