Job Summary:

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, seeks a dynamic and accomplished academic endocrinologist to serve as Program Director for its ACGME-accredited Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship Program. Reporting to the Division Chief and working in close collaboration with the Vice Chair of Education, the Program Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of the fellowship. This includes advancing clinical excellence, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a rigorous and supportive learning environment. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of endocrinology education at UK, while cultivating academic growth and meeting the evolving needs of both the institution and the broader community. The ideal candidate will exhibit emotional intelligence, a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care, and a passion for training future leaders in Endocrinology. The selected individual will be a recognized academic leader with a proven track record of excellence in clinical care, research, clinical education, and mentorship. Strong leadership abilities as a compassionate listener, strategic decision-maker, and an effective collaborator are essential. The candidate should demonstrate integrity, foster trust among colleagues, and possess excellent communication skills. Prior administrative experience in an academic medical center setting is preferred.
Key ResponsibilitiesIn collaboration with the Division Chief and Vice Chair of Education, the Endocrinology Fellowship Program Director will have responsibility, authority, and accountability for: program administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; fellow recruitment and selection, evaluation, and promotion of fellows, and disciplinary action; supervision of fellows; and fellow education in the context of patient care. The role will be provided 20% FTE of non-clinical time.

  • Provide strategic leadership and daily oversight of the ACGME-accredited Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship Program, ensuring excellence in education, clinical training, and program administration.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive curriculum aligned with ACGME competencies and institutional priorities.
  • Recruit, select, and mentor fellows; oversee evaluation, promotion, and, when necessary, disciplinary actions in accordance with institutional policy and in the context of high-quality patient care.
  • Maintain a dynamic, supportive learning environment that fosters professionalism and psychological safety—encouraging open feedback and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure full compliance with ACGME and institutional requirements, including documentation, program updates, and reporting obligations.
  • Collaborate with Division, Department, and institutional leadership to secure necessary faculty, administrative, and infrastructure support for the program.
  • Serve as a visible role model of clinical excellence, teaching, and professionalism within the Division and broader medical community.
  • Participate in clinical instruction of students, residents, and fellows in both ambulatory and inpatient settings.
  • Lead or contribute to fellow didactics, seminars, case conferences, and other structured educational activities.
  • Support the Division’s academic mission by facilitating scholarly activity and clinical research among trainees and faculty.
  • Represent the University of Kentucky and UK HealthCare as an active member of the medical staff, participating in medical staff affairs, quality initiatives, and upholding evidence-based practice standards.
  • Build and sustain relationships with alumni, external organizations, and professional societies to enhance the program’s visibility, reputation, and long-term growth.
  • Serve on appropriate Division, Department, University, Hospital, and College committees as assigned by the Division Chief.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
  • MD, DO, or equivalent terminal medical degree.
  • Must possess, or be eligible for, an unrestricted medical license in Kentucky.
  • Current board certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (ABIM or AOBIM).
  • Academic credentials that qualify for appointment as Assistant Professor or higher.
  • Minimum of three years of teaching and/or administrative experience in an ACGME-accredited Endocrinology or Internal Medicine program.
  • A teaching portfolio with objective evidence of teaching evidence (learner evaluations, peer and learner letters of support).
  • Academic experience including public speaking, involvement in regional or national organizations related to advancing endocrinology or medical education, and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Advanced training or experience in a relevant field, such as a Master of Health Professional Education, public health, or health services research.
