ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/Full TEACHING PROFESSOR of ARCHITECTURE / UMKC School of Science & Engineering / Division of Natural & Built Environment

Job Description

The Division of Natural and Built Environments (NBE) within the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) invites applications and nominations for a non-tenure track (NTT) position in Architecture. The position could be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor NTT rank, to begin Fall 2025. This position is for a full-time 9-month faculty appointment with the opportunity to have additional summer salary based on assigned administrative responsibilities. This faculty member will act as the Degree Program Coordinator (DPC, similar to a department chair). Academic/professional experience, leadership, vision-setting and administration will be highly valued within the applicant pool. As a new degree at UMKC, the successful candidate for this position will take the lead as the DPC in building the 5-yr Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program. Responsibilities will include facilitating the program through its initial NAAB accreditation.

Areas of Expertise

The ideal candidates will possess academic experience with a background in studio instruction, studio pedagogy, and digital and/or building technology. The candidate should demonstrate an area or areas of expertise which may include, building systems, sustainable design principles, 3-D digital modelling, simulation, and prototyping techniques. This is a rare opportunity to build a unique program and not be bound to traditional programming that existed before digital technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing the five-year degree program, managing the full-time and adjunct faculty, developing and teaching courses that guide students through foundational, intermediate, and advanced stages of architectural education. Their role will be crucial in shaping the curriculum, ensuring that students gain a comprehensive and practical education in architecture. If applicable, they should include any examples of using simulation, computation, fabrication, prototyping, and visualization to design, analyze, speculate, within their courses and/or research.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Assistant Nontenure (NTT) Professor Rank

· Candidates must hold at least one of the following: a professional graduate degree in architecture; an undergraduate degree in architecture and a graduate or doctoral degree in a related field; or an international equivalent of any of these.

Required Qualifications for Associate or Full NTT Professor Consideration

· Candidates must hold at least one of the following: a professional graduate degree in architecture; an undergraduate degree in architecture and a graduate or doctoral degree in a related field; or an international equivalent of any of these.

· Candidates must be a licensed architect, (US or International).

· Candidates must demonstrate that they work well with colleagues and students in performing their university responsibilities at their previous institution(s) or workplace.

Desired Qualifications for Assistant, Associate or Full Teaching Professor Consideration (address those applicable in application)

Teaching

· Experience or capacity to integrate emerging technologies with studio, seminar and/or lecture teaching.

· Experience with or ability to implement experimental teaching in terms of modality, methodology, and/or format.

· Experience with or aptitude to teach experiential, collaborative and/or interdisciplinary courses.

· Experience in architectural design that strives for impact on culture, society, communities, region(s), and the planet.

· Experience in a creative practice that participates in the discipline of architecture through critique, experimentation, or other means.

· Experience with or potential to contribute to collaborative and/or interdisciplinary research.

· Experience that exhibits exceptional professional practice integrating beauty, resilience, and environmental performance.

On Access and Engagement

· Experience focusing on student success, student empowerment, and the development of respecting cultures within studio and classroom settings.

· Experience facilitating or teaching others about identifying and addressing hurdles to access to the built environment and/or the profession of architecture.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, teaching and leadership experience and evidence of professional success and/or research. This is a 9-month, benefit-eligible, full-time (1.0) faculty appointment eligible for ranked promotion. There may be opportunity for summer administration duties and/or teaching.

About Architecture within NBE and UMKC
The Architecture discipline is within the SSE’s NBE Division. This places the faculty in a multidisciplinary environment that includes related faculty from construction, structural engineering, environmental science, urban planning, and more. The goal is for our students to have a chance of interacting with other students and faculty in complimentary disciplines, such as construction materials and management or urban planning. NBE stresses the power of design and the importance of the built world.

The faculty members in NBE and specifically the architecture disciplines are committed to excellence in design education, creative activity, research, and outreach missions. This program benefits from being within SSE, UMKC, and Kansas City. A city that is well known for designing large-scale stadia, transportation facilities, buildings, urban renovation and more. The city provides tremendous access to jobs, internships, real-life projects and practicing mentors and adjuncts.

Currently, the architecture, urban planning and design programs are housed in Katz Hall, which is a dedicated 32,800 sq-ft. building. They also have access to the 20,000 sq-ft, 3-D printing lab, student wood/metal fabrication equipment, and the augmented reality and virtual reality laboratory. These labs have over $4 million in equipment allowing our students to integrate state-of-the-art fabrication technology into their design education and research.
