Job summary

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) seeks two Assistant Area Engineers in Kelso and Chehalis, WA to support the Project Engineer in delivering highway design and construction projects that meet standards while staying on scope, schedule, and budget.

You will lead an office of engineers and consultants, ensure plans are constructable and environmentally responsible, and report progress to regional and state executives; a flexible/hybrid work model is available.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering Certification: Licensed as a Civil Professional Engineer in WA or eligible to obtain WA licensure within 6 months.
  • Civil Engineering expertise in transportation design, construction, and surveying.
  • Experience leading transportation projects through planning, environmental review, design, and delivery.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and deliver multiple projects on time and within budget.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, team-building, and change management skills.
  • Strong communication skills for internal teams, contractors, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Growth mindset and commitment to learning and improvement.
  • Service-oriented approach to meeting stakeholders' needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Project Engineer to plan budget, schedule, and workforce for CIP delivery.
  • Lead an office of engineers, interns, temporary staff, and consultants in design and contract development.
  • Ensure projects align with policy, scope, schedule, budget, and documentation; plans are constructable and bid-ready.
  • Communicate professionally with leadership, agencies, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with citizens, media, officials, contractors, and consultants to plan and operate an efficient transportation system.
  • Report project status to Regional and Statewide Executive Management to support accountability.
  • Coordinate input and resolve conflicts with internal and external entities.
  • Be prepared to certify with PE stamp that standards and policies are followed.
  • Ensure environmentally responsible project delivery.
