Job summary

Education Jobs NJ is seeking an Assistant Aquatic Director to assist the Aquatic Director in promoting programs and ensuring safety across indoor and outdoor facilities.

You will supervise lifeguards and instructors, with hands-on instruction and guarding about half the time, and help develop high-quality aquatic programs for all ages while upholding the YMCA mission.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years supervisory experience with emphasis on scheduling multiple pools and locations.
• Currently certified in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding, O2, and AED. Lifeguard Trainer, WSI or YSI recommended.
• Ability to conduct, record and analyze in-services and drills to ensure guards' skills are reviewed consistently.
• Experience supervising and evaluating employees and arranging work schedules.
• Strong public relations and communication skills.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatic Director, the Assistant Aquatic Director assists in promoting all aquatic programs, maintains proper health and safety standards, assists with supervising lifeguards and instructors, and in the general supervision of the aquatic facilities both within the facility and outdoor seasonal facilities, as assigned. A minimum of 50% of the incumbent's time will be hands-on instructing, guarding and supervising. The incumbent must have the ability to model the mission of the YMCA, and carry it out in a professional manner. The emphasis of this position will be placed on the development and supervision of programs for all ages and to ensure quality aquatic programs are delivered into the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Ensure all health and safety guidelines are strictly adhered to.
2. To assist Director in developing a well-rounded, quality aquatic programs for all ages and levels and ensure that all aquatic facilities are being utilized their maximum potential.
3. Ensure that all aquatic programs are consistent with the YMCA's mission and meet the objectives that stress good sportsmanship and values.
4. Assist in overseeing and maintaining the pool cleaning schedule for aquatic facilities as assigned, this can include outdoor seasonal facilities as well.
5. Opening, closing and oversight of outdoor facilities as assigned.
6. Coordinate trainings for safety and risk management, and maintain training records.
7. In cooperation with the Aquatic Director, provide training and reviews for all staff and volunteers through personal consultations, conferences, special courses and clinics that relate to all areas of the aquatic department and programs.
8. Share direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of all participants through qualified instructors and lifeguards with the Aquatic Director.
9. Coordinate swimming instructions within the guidelines and best practices the National YMCA Aquatic Program and any other cooperating organization.
10. Maintain a professional appearance and keep an orderly pool deck and office.
11. Attend all assigned staff meetings and staff development trainings.
12. Assist in preparation of the annual budget and share a responsibility with the Aquatic Director for income and expenses of approved budget.
13. Represent the Y in a positive image and maintain positive, productive relationships with external organizations and groups as appropriate.
14. Conduct performance evaluations on an annual basis for all staff reporting to you under the leadership of the Director.
15. Provide consistent leadership and coaching to staff.
16. Work closely with the Aquatic Director to maintain a cohesive, well-developed, highly trained staff team.
17. Work closely with the Aquatic Director to identify aquatic areas of growth and development.
18. Complete all administrative paperwork in an efficient, accurate and timely fashion.
19. Follow the house rules and expect the same from staff.
20. Promote a "family and member friendly environment".

REQUIREMENTS:

• The incumbent must be at least 21 years of age and have a minimum of 2 years supervisory experience with an emphasis on scheduling multiple pools and locations.
• The incumbent must be currently certified in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding, O2, and AED. Lifeguard Trainer, WSI or YSI recommended at time of hire or secured within one year.
• Must have the ability to conduct, record and analyze in-services and drills to ensure all guards' skills are reviewed consistently and remain strong.
• The incumbent must have experience in supervising and evaluating employees and arranging work schedules.
• Skills in public relations, as well as good written and verbal communication skills are required.

• Ability to develop positive relationships with members, volunteers and staff are essential.
• Incumbent must have ability to assist with hiring, training and supervising swim instructors and other aquatic staff.
• Ability to support and act on behalf of the Aquatic Director in their absence.

PHYSICAL REQURIEMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Sufficient strength and skill technique to control and rescue struggling adult swimmers, lifting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, concentration, attention and focus to one area for extended periods of time, warm weather outdoor work, average to warm in-door and out-door pool heat and humidity.
