Job Description: ICU Nurse Supervisor at UTSW

The Multi-Specialty ICU at UTSW’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (CUH) addresses the increasing demand for advanced specialized care for critically ill patients in North Texas and neighboring states. Designed with a patient-centric approach and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, this ICU enhances team collaboration and aims to deliver optimal outcomes for high-acuity Cardiac and Medical ICU patients.

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position.

Education and Experience
  • BLS / ACLS, NIHSS, & BSN required; MSN & CCRN preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.
  • At least three years of RN experience; specific requirements may vary by unit or standard of care.
  • Texas BON or Compact State RN License required.
Job Duties
  1. Supervise and evaluate patient care provided by assigned personnel, conduct daily patient rounds, perform chart audits, and mentor staff.
  2. Manage staffing to meet productivity targets, review and adjust staffing based on census and acuity, and coordinate with the Central Staffing Office and House Supervisor.
  3. Model proactive problem-solving, collaborate with staff, and escalate unresolved issues through the chain of command.
  4. Advocate for patient and staff safety, ensuring a safe care environment.
  5. Provide flexible coverage during staffing shortages or crises.
  6. Offer coaching and counseling to nursing personnel, with follow-up reports to management.
  7. Support staff development through participation in unit activities, decision-making, hospital committees, and continuing education, aiming to improve employee engagement scores.
  8. Ensure proper reporting of events via RL Solutions, investigate incident reports, and notify relevant management of high-risk situations.
  9. Participate in patient care conferences, work to improve patient satisfaction scores, and facilitate efficient patient discharge processes.
  10. Maintain records of performance, contribute to performance reviews, and oversee staff orientation.
  11. Coordinate self-scheduling, monitor Kronos records for trends, and manage staffing needs.
  12. Oversee inventory control of equipment and supplies, facilitate equipment returns, and involve staff in supply needs assessment.
  13. Assist with staff meetings, special projects, and quality improvement activities, including data communication and staff input on safety and infection control initiatives.

This position is security-sensitive under Texas Education Code §51.215, allowing UT Southwestern to conduct criminal background checks.
