• CAC I and CAC II professionals may conduct SUD assessments but may not diagnose; all assessment activities must be within the credential scope and program requirements.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive substance use disorder assessments per DC DBH requirements and standards of care.
• Interview consumers to gather substance use history, behavioral health, psychosocial needs, functioning, strengths, risks, and other factors.
• Apply ASAM criteria to determine appropriate level of care and services within scope of practice.
• Document findings clearly and timely with rationale for treatment recommendations.
• Develop or contribute to initial treatment plans and recommendations based on identified needs.
• Complete reassessments and treatment plan updates as assigned to support ongoing care.
• Escalate clinical concerns to appropriate leadership when needed.
• Coordinate with CACs, RSS, and other SUD team members to ensure continuity of care.
• Maintain accurate records in compliance with confidentiality and regulatory requirements.

Position Summary

The Assessor plays an important role in the front end of the consumer care journey, gathering and evaluating information about each consumer’s substance use, behavioral health, psychosocial needs, functioning, strengths, and risk factors to determine appropriate treatment needs and level of care.

This role is ideal for a professional who is comfortable conducting structured interviews, synthesizing complex information, completing thorough clinical documentation, and working efficiently in a behavioral health environment.

Required Licensure/Certification

Candidates must hold a current, active District of Columbia license or certification, in good standing, that qualifies them to perform SUD assessments under DC DBH Chapter 63.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience conducting SUD assessments using ASAM criteria and making level-of-care recommendations.
• Experience conducting assessments within a DC DBH-certified or Medicaid-funded SUD program.
• Experience working in outpatient and/or intensive outpatient (IOP) substance use treatment settings.
• Experience assessing individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health needs.
• Familiarity with DC DBH Chapter 63 and related SUD documentation and service requirements.
• Experience working within a multidisciplinary community behavioral health or SUD treatment team.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive substance use disorder assessments in accordance with DC DBH requirements, organizational procedures, and applicable standards of care.
• Interview consumers and gather relevant information regarding substance use history, behavioral and physical health, psychosocial needs, functioning, strengths, risks, and other factors affecting treatment.
• Apply ASAM criteria to assessment findings to identify and document the appropriate level of care and recommended SUD services within the individual’s professional scope of practice.
• Complete required assessment documentation accurately, thoroughly, and within established timeframes, including clear documentation of findings and the rationale supporting treatment recommendations.
• Develop or contribute to initial treatment plans and treatment recommendations based on identified consumer needs.
• Complete reassessments, treatment plan reviews, and treatment plan updates as assigned to support ongoing care and program requirements.
• Identify clinical concerns, changes in consumer needs, or circumstances requiring additional evaluation or escalation and communicate them to appropriate clinical leadership.
• Coordinate with Clinical Managers, Certified Addiction Counselors (CACs), Recovery Support Specialists (RSS), and other members of the SUD team to support timely transition into appropriate services and continuity of care.
• Maintain accurate consumer records and comply with applicable confidentiality, documentation, DC DBH, Medicaid, and organizational requirements.

Work Setting & Schedule

This is a hybrid role that may be performed primarily remotely, with in-person availability required based on consumer and program needs.

Assessments, documentation, and other responsibilities may be completed remotely when appropriate and permitted by program requirements. Assessors should also be available to conduct assessments or participate in other activities in person at the Spring Leaf Solutions office in Washington, DC when needed.

The specific balance of remote and in-person work may vary and will be determined based on program needs and coordination with your direct supervisor. Candidates should therefore be able to reliably provide both remote and in-person services as required. Assessment volume may vary based on referrals, admissions, and consumer demand.
