Job summary

The San Luis Obispo County Assessor’s Office is seeking an Assessment Technician I to provide excellent customer service to the public and to support other divisions within the department. This role is part of a career series that maintains the property tax roll and supports office staff.

Job description

This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County. The San Luis Obispo County Assessor’s Office is looking to hire an Assessment Technician I who is a service-oriented individual who will provide excellent customer service to the public we serve, as well as to support other divisions within the department. The Assessor’s Office seeks excellence in providing information, services, and accurate property assessments through our personal commitment to integrity, mutual respect and teamwork. Assessment Technician I is part of a career series that includes Assessment Technician I, II, III, and IV. Under the direction of the section supervisor, performs a variety of tax assessment duties to complete and maintain the property tax roll, and provides support and service to other office sections and the public.

Typical Tasks and Representative Duties

  • Learns policies and procedures and performs basic assessment duties.
  • Enters, scans, researches, and maintains a large variety and volume of assessment data with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Assists and educates staff and the public about various assessment situations; explains the application of various Revenue and Taxation Codes, and other codes, statutes, and regulations.
  • Answers phones and assists the public with general assessment questions.
  • Reads and interprets legal descriptions.
  • Performs general administrative and technical duties in support of the department; prepares a variety of written correspondence, reports, and other written materials; distributes a variety of written materials to department staff and various agencies.
  • Performs basic cash handling and clerical accounting duties.
  • May be called upon to assist or serve on special projects or teams.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Read and interpret maps and property descriptions
  • Receive and clarify customer concerns, provide basic information, and direct issues to appropriate staff
  • Utilize computer software including those applications specific to the department, division, and/or program
  • Effectively prioritize workload in an environment of regular interruption
  • Understand and apply laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Promote an organized, professional, and safety-conscious work environment
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing to a diverse population of individuals and groups
  • Foster effective and positive working relationships with individuals from diverse perspectives by demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, effective communication, advisory expertise, mediation, conflict resolution, and consensus building
Education and Experience

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

All levels: Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate.

In addition to the above: Assessment Technician I: Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate. In addition, one year of clerical experience in an office environment.

Licenses and Certificates

A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

An initial application review will be conducted. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and are best qualified will be invited to participate in selection activities which may include online assessments, performance exams, written exams, and interviews.

Final candidates will be required to have an in-depth background review performed before proceeding in the process. Please note that references will not be contacted until the end of the process. The job includes duties and responsibilities that require frequent, regular attendance at our San Luis Obispo County office.
