Job summary

The Scruggs Company is seeking an experienced Asphalt Screed Operator to join our Operations team in Georgia. The successful candidate will monitor screed operation, adjust settings, and maintain safe, efficient progress throughout each shift.

Responsibilities include setting the screed, ensuring proper depth and grade, and assisting with end-of-day maintenance. Night and extended shifts may be required; safety rules must be followed, and exemplary conduct maintained.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years of experience operating asphalt screed equipment.
• Ability to set the screed and adjust for depth, grade, and cross-section.
• Must follow safety rules and communicate issues to foreman.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the operation and function of the screed throughout the work day, maintain an awareness of unusual noises on the paver or operation of the screed. Operator must bring any exceptions to the attention of the foreman.
• Set the screed at the beginning of each operation and adjust per specifications to achieve correct depth, grade, and cross-section.
• Operate the screed safely around personnel and equipment.
• Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the screed at the end of the day; keep equipment clean and orderly.
• Work nights and extended shifts when required by the project.
• Follow all safety rules and perform other duties as assigned.
• Maintain professional conduct at all times.
• Complete Learning Management System Initiatives as required.

Job Description:

Job Duties:

• Monitor the operation and function of the screed throughout the work day, maintain an awareness of unusual noises on the paver or operation of the screed. Operator must bring any exceptions to the attention of the foreman.
• The ability to set the screed on the asphalt paver at the beginning of each operation; adjust the screed according to the asphalt lay down specification in order to receive correct depth and to make correct grade and finished cross-section.
• The ability to operate the screed in a manner to assure the safety of personnel around and on the equipment.
• Assist in the cleaning and maintenance to screed at the end of the day. Equipment must be clean and kept in an orderly condition.
• Operator must have the ability to work nights and extended shifts when the project dictates.
• All safety rules are to be followed.
• Operator is expected to perform other duties as assigned.
• Maintain professional conduct at all times.
• Complete all assigned Learning Management System Initiatives.

Experience & Knowledge:

1-2 years of experience operating asphalt screed equipment, including setting and adjusting screed for proper depth, grade, and cross-section, and performing routine maintenance and cleaning.

Exercise judgment to comply with instructions, prescribed routines, practices, or methods. Decisions are often minor within the limitations of direction of supervisor.

Physical Activity/Demand:

• Position requires the ability to climb onto machine, grasp control levers, push and pull, and have sensitivity to touch. Operator must have the ability to feel amount of pressure exerted on the levers. This position is repetitive in motions of the hand, wrist, and fingers. Operator must be able to perceive sounds and receive detailed information through oral communications, as well as to make fine discrimination in equipment noises which may indicate mechanical problems.
• Light effort required to operate the screed levers and controls. Operator must be able to move constantly and lift/move very light weight material (under 25 pounds).

Mental & Visual Demand:

Continuous mental and visual attention is required to operate the screed. Constant alertness, care, and attention to activities including visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision.

Responsibility for Equipment:

Operator is responsible for preventing damage to equipment due to mistakes, carelessness, incorrect process or procedures. Such mishaps could be costly in terms of repair or replacement as well as production time.

Responsibility for Material:

Operator is responsible for preventing damage to material worked.

Responsibility for Safety of Others:

Normal care necessary to prevent injury to others. An accident, should it occur, would result in minor injuries, such as sprains or burns.

Responsibility for Work of Others:

Responsible for own work; works closely with paver operator.

Working Conditions:

Disagreeable working conditions for screed operator. Continuous exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, sun and seasonal temperature variances. Operator is exposed to machine noise and other elements with several continuously present to the extent of being objectionable.

Injuries should they occur, could result in minor burns or abrasions.
