Job summary

Hubbard Construction Company is seeking a skilled Roller Operator for our Tampa, FL job site. You will operate rollers/compactors to achieve proper compaction of dirt, aggregate, and asphalt, reading grade stakes with grade checkers, lasers, or GPS to maintain precise grades.

Candidate should have 3–5 years of related experience, strong safety mindset, and ability to work with a team outdoors in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• 3–5 years of industry-related experience (roads/highways/bridges).
• Ability to read grade stakes and work with grade checker, laser, or GPS.

Responsibilities

• Safely operates roller to compact dirt, aggregate, or asphalt to required grade and surface.
• Reads grade stakes and maintains grade with grade checker, laser, or GPS.
• Controls speed and direction based on material and desired grade/surface.
• Coordinates with crew using hand signals to ensure safety.
• Inspects equipment daily and reports maintenance needs.
• Keeps equipment clean and ready for transport when required.
• Maintains order, safety, and cleanliness at the job site.
• Other duties as assigned.

General Description

Operates the roller by using either rollers or drums to compress/compact dirt, aggregate, or blacktop. The operator may use the vibration component occasionally.

Key Duties

• Safely operates roller to compress/compact dirt, aggregate, or blacktop to achieve the specified grading and smooth surface.
• Reads grade stakes and works with grade checker, laser, or GPS to maintain grade.
• Determines speed and direction of roller based on knowledge of compressible material to achieve a smooth grade and/or surface.
• Works closely with other crew members using hand signals to coordinate work and ensure safety.
• Performs daily inspection and maintenance and ensures that roller is in safe, proper working order including fluid checks and proper lubrication. Reports to shop when roller needs maintenance and repair.
• Keeps roller clean and prepares equipment for transport on flatbed when needed.
• Maintains orderliness, cleanliness and safety at job-site.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

• A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
• Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
• Three (3) to Five (5) years or more of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on roads, highways, and bridges.

Physical Demands

• Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
• Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 25 pounds personally.
• Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
• Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
• The Operator must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
• The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisor and/or spotter).

Work Environment

• Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
• Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
• Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
