Job summary

Texas Materials - Gulf Coast Area is seeking an Asphalt Raker to help straighten asphalt joints and assist the paving crew on busy job sites in the Houston area. You will perform daily tool maintenance, follow safety policies, and help with site setup and material handling.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, basic math and reading skills, and the ability to work nights or weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

• Signal operators to align equipment and manage materials.
• Distribute asphalt and rake to achieve a smooth finish.
• Clean tools and equipment and maintain worksite cleanliness.
• Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials as directed.
• Assist with placement and movement of signs and traffic controls.
• Maintain regular attendance and be prepared for shifts.

Position Overview

The Asphalt Raker’s primary function is to use the lute rake to straighten asphalt joints and for hand working areas the paving machine is unable to reach. The Asphalt Raker is required to perform daily maintenance on tools and to ensure all tools are stored properly at the end of each shift. In addition, the Asphalt Raker is expected to assist in the general operation of each job site.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

• Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
• Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment. Report any problems to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
• Follow direction of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite.
• Assist construction/paving crew with various duties such as shoveling and raking, safely backing/dumping trucks into paver.
• Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and materials with shovel.
• Distribution of asphalt by raking on paved surface.
• Cleaning excess asphalt off tools and equipment.
• Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials such as dirt, concrete, asphalt and other unspecified materials.
• Proper matching and smoothing of joints for a consistent finish.
• Assists in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
• Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
• Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience

• High school diploma or General Education Degree GED is preferred.
• Previous related experience in the construction field.

Work Requirements

• Must be 18 years in age or older.
• Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
• Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
• Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
• Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
• Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
