General Description
A Quality Control Technician is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs various duties on construction projects, including inspection, testing, and quality assurance of materials and processes. The technician must be adaptable, capable of transferring between tasks as workflow demands.
Key Duties
- Control the quality of hot mix asphalt production through plant inspection, material testing, and jobsite review, including routine and special laboratory testing to ensure standards.
- Sample, visually inspect, and conduct laboratory testing of construction materials according to standard test methods, including DOT regulations, to assure quality at production, shipping, and delivery points.
- Communicate and document test results to plant operators, supervisors, and other relevant personnel.
- Review mix designs and product specifications for upcoming projects.
- Perform jobsite inspections, customer service, and troubleshooting as needed.
- Prepare QC reports and recommend solutions to quality issues.
- Inspect stockpiles, material sources, and loads at plant sites.
- Conduct testing and assist in plant inspection and calibration to maintain product quality.
- Verify external laboratory results and maintain accurate records of test data, product quality, and defective materials.
- Prepare statistical quality reports for company product lines.
- Serve as a technical resource for operations, sales, and clients.
- Stay informed of new specifications and technical developments to improve operational efficiency, attending relevant meetings.
- Possess working knowledge of asphalt and plant operations.
- Perform tests in an orderly, efficient, and accurate manner.
- Understand mix design characteristics and product specifications.
- Proficient in mathematics and basic computer skills.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing, interacting with personnel at all organizational levels.
- Work independently, solving problems as they arise.
- Collaborate with vendors, agencies, and customers on quality issues.
- Perform incidental duties as required.
Qualifications
- Must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily.
- High school diploma or GED preferred; 1-2 years of college or trade training beneficial.
- 3-5 years of field and plant experience in asphalt and aggregate testing and control, especially on roads, highways, and bridges.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Physical Demands
Constant physical effort including standing, stooping, bending, crouching, and working overhead is required. Ability to work with hands and power tools frequently.
