Job description

Title: Asphalt Plant Operator - Orlando FL or surrounding area

Jr. Davis Construction Company / S&L Materials Inc. is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic to fill the position of Asphalt Plant Operator. The operator will operate asphalt plants controls, weigh and deliver specified quantities of aggregates and asphalt cement to the dryer for heating, and to the mixer for mixing and dumping into trucks. Plant Operators maintain proper heat in the dryer by adjusting thermostatic controls and maintain proper flow of materials. They assist in maintenance of plant equipment and in compiling reports regarding plant production & plant maintenance. May perform other related duties.

We are one of the largest heavy highway and civil construction firms in the state with over 900 employees, while still retaining a family business atmosphere.

COMPENSATION: Based on experience. Our OJT (On the Job Training) will allow you to move up in our company as your skill set expands.

Responsibilities:
  • An asphalt plant operator manages equipment that sends hot mix asphalt materials through a mixing drum and into a storage silo until it is time to be loaded into trucks.
  • As an asphalt plant operator, you collaborate with the quality control department to inspect each batch of product to ensure a quality mix is produced.
  • Your job duties also include assisting the plant foreman with material ordering, inventory management, plant maintenance, and record keeping.
  • Maintain safety policies and all necessary paperwork, and need to communicate with road crews, truck drivers, dispatchers, and other coworkers. Some positions may require you to train and supervise asphalt workers and other general laborers.
Requirements:
  • Climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, stretching, pushing, pulling, vibration, twisting, kneeling, standing, walking, sitting, reaching.
  • Requires occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb stairs/ladders to the top of the plant.
  • Uses tools such as sledge hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, cutting torch, welder, pneumatic hammer/drill, sand blaster, pipe wrench, hand shovel.
  • Answers telephone, radio, and takes and inputs orders.
  • Overtime work is required.
  • May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather.
  • Requires riding to and from plant sites.

Knowledge & Skills:
  • High school graduate with strong math skills and strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Minimum 3 years experience as Asphalt Plant Operator.
  • Experience with Aztec double barrel components & controls a plus.
  • Computer literate, experience with Microsoft Excel.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to work 10 to 12 hours a day or night and weekends when needed.
  • Ability to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
