Job summary

The Scruggs Company in Waycross, GA seeks a Breakdown Roller Operator to join our Asphalt Operations team. You will achieve proper asphalt density by maintaining rolling patterns and applying correct breakdown roller techniques for smooth mat transitions.

Responsibilities include inspecting fluids, monitoring gauges, assisting with lubrication, and supporting the crew in site prep. A minimum of 1 year roller experience and strict safety compliance are expected.

Qualifications

Minimum 1 year experience operating a Breakdown Roller.
Ability to accurately assess asphalt mat conditions throughout the process.
Reference to using machine gauges and operating levers with minimal interpretation.

Responsibilities

Check fluids at engine startup and monitor gauges and fluid levels during operation.
Monitor roller function and report anomalies to supervisor.
Assist with lubrication, fueling, and light mechanical adjustments as needed.
Assist with laying asphalt, dumping trucks, or other site preparation duties as required.
Communicate clearly with inspectors to ensure asphalt densities are achieved.
Evaluate asphalt mat for deficiencies during laydown.

Job Description

The successful candidate will achieve appropriate asphalt density by maintaining set rolling patterns and maintain proper breakdown roller techniques to allow for smooth mat transitions.

Job Duties

Check all fluids at the beginning of the engine startup for the day, continue to monitor gauges and fluid levels throughout the day during operation.
Monitor the operation and function of the roller throughout the workday. Maintain an awareness of the unusual noises or operation and bring any exceptions to the attention of the supervisor.
Perform light mechanical adjustments and/or assist mechanic in performing repair on equipment, assist with the lubrication and fueling of the roller.
The ability to perform a variety of task which may include compacting asphalt as well as assist related crew in laying asphalt, dumping trucks, or other such duties in site preparation.
Communicate clearly with inspectors or outside agents during operations to ensure asphalt densities are being achieved.
Continuously evaluate asphalt mat for deficiencies or imperfections during laydown process.
The ability to operate the roller in a manner to assure the safety of personnel around the equipment. Operate the roller on terrain and fill/placed materials as to not cause damage to the equipment or injury to the operator, operate the roller around structures, curb and gutter, tools, and traffic as not to cause damage.
Keep roller in a clean and orderly condition. Follow all state/federal safety rules and company policies and procedures.
Assist crew with laborious work when not operating roller.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Operate roller in accordance with all safety mandates (ROPS, seatbelts, three point contact for entrance & exit of machine, etc.).
Maintain professional conduct at all times.
Complete all assigned Learning Management System training initiatives.

Experience & Knowledge

Minimum 1 year experience operating a Breakdown Roller.
Ability to accurately assess asphalt mat conditions throughout the process.
Simple reference to use of machine gauges and operating levers where little interpretation is required.

Physical Activity & Demand

Position requires the ability to climb, to grasp, to push and pull, to bend at the waist, to walk and stand for long periods of time and to lift up to 50 pounds.
Position requires the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communications.

Continuous mental and visual attention required to avoid hazards and mistakes.

Working Conditions

Disagreeable working conditions with continuous exposure to dust, dirt, seasonal temperature variances, wet cement, with several elements continuously present to the extent of being objectionable.

Hazards

Injuries should they occur, would result in partial incapacitation due to cuts and sprains.
