Job summary

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is seeking an Assistant Manager, Material Recovery to support the Manager in overseeing salvage, grading, recycling, and textile recovery operations. The role guides daily work, coaches team members, maintains product flow, and helps achieve department goals for production and efficiency.

You'll assist with machine-based sorting, ensure safety procedures, monitor process flows, and provide training to maintain quality standards while supporting

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, train, and motivate others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Manager in carrying out department plans for salvage, grading, recycling, and material recovery operations.
  • Help achieve daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals for production, revenue, profit, and environmental impact.
  • Monitor and record product levels to help meet sales goals, optimize material recovery, and reduce waste.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with vendors, team members, and customers.
  • Help ensure that the work location is clean, organized, safe, and aligned with the Goodwill brand.
  • Provide training and feedback to team members to support quality standards and daily production goals.
  • Support daily operating decisions, including sorting priorities based on product levels and operational needs.
  • Help track graded bales, cart changes, product categories, weights, and other required production information.
  • Ensure team members follow safety, security, and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Assist with payroll, performance management activities, including coaching, discipline, performance improvement plans, annual reviews, staffing, and team development.
  • Support operators with loading and unloading processes, cart exchanges, speech sorting needs, and daily machine operation flow.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Assistant Manager, Material Recovery supports the Manager in overseeing salvage, grading, recycling, and textile recovery operations. This position helps guide daily work, coach team members, maintain product flow, support safety and quality standards, and assist with department goals for production, revenue, waste diversion, and operational efficiency.

This role also supports machine-based sorting operations by helping ensure operators understand their work, follow safe procedures, monitor carts and product flow, and complete required tasks accurately.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support the Manager in carrying out department plans for salvage, grading, recycling, and material recovery operations.
  • Help achieve daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals for production, revenue, profit, and environmental impact.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent work experience required.

Qualifications
  • Two or more years of supervisory or management experience preferred, ideally in thrift, production, textile recovery, recycling, warehouse, or related operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, train, and motivate others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen, where applicable.
  • Standing and walking frequently; handling materials constantly.
  • Occasionally sitting, reaching, climbing, crawling, squatting, kneeling, or bending.
  • Frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifting 51–100 pounds or more, based on business need and safety requirements.
