Job summary

CAPS Collaborative is seeking a dynamic ASL Interpreter to support Deaf & Hard of Hearing programs in Newton Public Schools. The interpreter will assist in general education inclusion classrooms and with Deaf staff, across middle/high school settings.

Responsibilities include facilitating communication among students, staff and teachers in diverse settings, and occasional tutoring or committee involvement. The position runs through the school year with possible summer hours, offering a generous

Job Description

CAPS Collaborative is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic ASL Interpreter to join our growing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs in the Newton Public Schools. The applicant will support students in general education inclusion classrooms and our Deaf staff as needed. We are seeking applicants for our Newton Public School middle/high school programs.

The ASL interpreter shall facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, the classroom teachers and other personnel in the school system. The interpreter may perform this responsibility in a variety of settings, in and outside of the classroom. The interpreter may interpret for Deaf staff as needed for meetings and school-wide events.

Other duties that may be performed when they do not interfere with interpreting include tutoring, participation in meetings and being an active member of the school's educational team. School year position with additional summer hours available.

Job Requirements

• Must meet the minimum requirements as set forth by the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) such as MCDHH Screening (at a minimum) and a rating of 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English Interpreter Training Program completion preferred Experience and/or training in child development and education preferred Ability to communicate effectively with students and adjust interpretation according to the student’s preferred language and communication needs
• At least 1 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
