Job summary

ESC ESC of Northeast Ohio in Independence, Ohio is seeking an ASL Language Facilitator/Aide to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students throughout the school day. Working under teachers and the educational team, you will help students access instruction and develop receptive and expressive language using ASL.

This full-time role runs about 6.5 hours per day on all student days, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or college coursework in education, deaf education, ASL, or related field preferred
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language required
  • Experience working with deaf or hard of hearing students preferred
  • Knowledge of child development, language acquisition, and educational support strategies preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and families
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, flexibility, and confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between student and teachers, staff, and peers using ASL and other appropriate methods
  • Support student understanding of classroom instruction, directions, assignments, and activities
  • Reinforce vocabulary, concepts, and language presented during lessons
  • Assist with academic tasks, organization, and classroom participation as directed by licensed staff
  • Encourage student independence, self-advocacy, and social interaction with peers
  • Provide support during specials, assemblies, lunch, field trips, and other activities as needed
  • Collaborate with teachers, interpreters, related service providers, and other school personnel regarding student needs and progress
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and educational records
  • Document observations, strategies, and student progress when requested
  • Follow IEP accommodations, behavior plans, and communication goals as assigned

Job Description:

The ASL Language Facilitator/Aide supports deaf and hard-of-hearing students in the educational setting by providing communication access and language support throughout the school day. This role works under the direction of the classroom teacher, intervention specialist, teacher of the deaf, and/or educational team to help students access instruction, participate in classroom activities, and develop receptive and expressive language skills using American Sign Language (ASL).

Work Days: All Student Days on the BCSD School District Calendar

Hours: 6.5 hours per day- 7:15 am- 2:15 pm (30 minute unpaid lunch)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate communication between the student and teachers, staff, and peers using ASL and other appropriate communication methods
  • Support the student's understanding of classroom instruction, directions, assignments, and activities
  • Reinforce vocabulary, concepts, and language presented during lessons
  • Assist with academic tasks, organization, and classroom participation as directed by licensed staff

Work Environment:

This position is typically based in a K12 school setting and may require movement throughout the school day, including classrooms, cafeteria, playground, gym, and community-based instructional settings.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school day
  • Ability to lift, bend, and assist students as needed within district guidelines
  • Visual and manual dexterity sufficient for effective ASL communication
