Job summary

ASDOH seeks an Instructor of Dental Hygiene to supervise and teach predoctoral students across clinical, preclinical, laboratory, and classroom settings. The role emphasizes patient-centered care, periodontal maintenance, and infection control within ASDOH clinics.

You will collaborate with Clinic Directors and faculty to advance teaching excellence, evaluate student performance, and contribute to scholarly activities. A Bachelor’s in Dental Hygiene and applicable license are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene and valid Arizona license (local anesthesia preferred).
• 3-6 years experience required; academic clinical education experience preferred.
• Highly skilled in dental hygiene with strong mentoring, teamwork and patient care.

Responsibilities

• Promote evidence-based practice, professionalism, ethical decision-making, and effective patient communication while supervising predoctoral students and supporting comprehensive treatment planning.
• Provide direct supervision and mentorship to students in clinical, preclinical, laboratory, and classroom settings to develop competency in preventive dentistry, periodontal therapy, radiology, infection control, and patient-centered care.
• Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback and guidance to support skill development and clinical competence.
• Assist in Radiology department coverage and teaching practices to students.
• Participate in school, university, and professional committees, governance, accreditation activities, and community outreach while engaging in scholarly work consistent with faculty rank.

ASDOH - Instructor Dental Hygiene

Promote a culture of professionalism, respect, collegiality, diversity, and humanistic education while advancing the mission and goals of ASDOH and A.T. Still University through excellence in patient care, teaching, scholarship, and service; collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to support clinical operations, quality assurance, patient safety, and infection control; provide direct supervision and instruction to predoctoral dental students within ASDOH clinics while facilitating student learning, professional development, and achievement of clinical competency through classroom, laboratory, preclinical, and clinical instruction; and collaborate with Clinic Directors, faculty, and staff to support comprehensive patient-centered care, including periodontal maintenance and preventive care programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Promote evidence-based practice, professionalism, ethical decision-making, and effective patient communication while providing direct patient care alongside the instruction of predoctoral students, and collaborate with Clinic Directors and faculty to support comprehensive treatment planning, continuity of care, and periodontal maintenance programs.
• Provide direct supervision, instruction, and mentorship to predoctoral dental students in clinical, preclinical, laboratory, and classroom settings, facilitating competency development in preventive dentistry, periodontal therapy, radiology, infection control, and patient-centered care.
• Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback, assessment, and mentorship to support ongoing skill development and clinical competency.
• Provide coverage and aid in the Radiology department acquiring images and teaching practices to the students.
• Participate in school, university, and professional committees, governance and accreditation activities, and community outreach initiatives while maintaining professional development and engaging in scholarly activities consistent with faculty rank, expertise, and workload.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

• Dental Hygiene, Bachelor's degree
• Valid Arizona dental hygiene and local anesthesia license.
• 3-6 years experience required.
• Academic experience in clinical education preferred. 5+ years' experience in provision of dental hygiene patient care preferred.
• Knowledge: Non-surgical periodontal instruments, instrumentation and technique. Periodontal anatomy and physiology. Parameters for periodontal surgical referral.
• Skills: Must be highly skilled in dental hygiene and patient care. Must be team oriented, strong mentoring skills and personable.
• Abilities: Must able to evaluate and grade non-surgical perio procedures using current American Academy of Periodontology guidelines; determine proper non-surgical techniques and evaluation of non-surgical perio procedure completion. This includes direct patient care when indicated to ensure patient treatment is completed if student cannot complete the non-surgical perio procedure in a timely manner.
