Job summary

Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, FL is seeking a skilled prop and figure fabricator/maintenance technician responsible for maintaining, repairing, installing and finishing silicone skins, fiberglass shells, costumes, props and sets for rides and shows.

You will perform painting, airbrushing, molding, casting, sewing, and carpentry tasks, and collaborate with Ride and Show Maintenance to access figures and sets for inspections and repairs, ensuring safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in prop/figure fabrication and maintenance for animated figures and sets.
  • Experience with silicone and fiberglass skin finishing and painting techniques.
  • Ability to read and follow safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and install skins, coverings, and props for animated figures and sets.
  • Paint using airbrush, faux finishing, and automotive techniques on silicone and fiberglass skins.
  • Maintain sets and show elements, including backdrops, curtains, and soft materials.
  • Assist access into figures/props for inspections and repairs with teardown/assembly of parts as needed.
  • Fabricate and install fasteners and attachments for figures, sets, and props.
  • Inspect equipment and document findings; support safety and quality walks.
  • Adhere to Environmental, Health & Safety policies and participate in team safety activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

Maintain the original aesthetics and function of the animated figures, props, and sets within the Rides and Shows. The responsibilities will include cleaning, repairing, installing, and finishing/painting skins, shells, costumes, props, and set pieces as well as access into these assets for Ride and Show Mechanics. Knowledge of all techniques, materials, and tools involved in silicone skin repair, fiberglass repair and finishing, scenic painting, faux finishing, airbrushing, automotive painting, carpentry, sculpting, mold making, casting, fabrication, sewing, costuming, patterning, wig care, mechanical work, and problem solving will be utilized.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and install flexible and non-flexible skins, coverings (including costumes, wigs, fur, and feathers), and support structures for animated figures. This includes planning/preparing for work, cleaning, repairing, painting of silicone and fiberglass skins and shells, cleaning of work area, and documenting work. Mends or replaces costumes and other figure coverings. Painting processes to include properly assessing, mixing, and applying airbrush and/or faux paint techniques, automotive paint applications, as well as wet/dry brush and sponge painting
  • Maintain sets within Rides and Shows to include planning/preparing for work, cleaning, sculpting, construction, painting, cleaning of work area, and documenting work. Maintenance of show sets to include mending or replacing backdrops, curtains, scrims, and other set related soft materials. Painting techniques to include brushing, rolling, blending, spraying, and faux finishing techniques of show sets.
  • Maintain, fabricate, and install show props to include planning/preparing for work, cleaning, molding, casting, construction, finishing/painting, cleaning of work area, and documenting work.
  • Assist Ride and Show Maintenance with access into figures, props, and sets for their inspections and repairs to include mechanical disassembly and assembly of parts related to animated figures.
  • Maintain, fabricate, and install/embed fasteners and attachments for animated figures, sets, and props. This can include buckles, straps, zippers, snaps, stand-offs, tabs, and various inserts.
  • Inspect figures, sets, props, shop facilities, equipment, and tools for any wear/damage and document findings. Assist in show quality walk-throughs, assessing animated figures, show sets and props for necessary repairs and improvements.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • High school degree or GED is required
  • Associate’s degree is preferred - Visual Arts, Scenery Production, Technical Theater, Costuming or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred - Visual Arts, Scenery Production, Technical Theater, Costuming or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
  • 3+ years set/prop fabrication and maintenance with the finishing aspect of animated figures is required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Florida Driver’s License/ required to operate company vehicles
