Overview
PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Plan, direct, and implement activity therapy programs as a component of the patient’s treatment plan.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Complete activity assessments through patient observation and interviews with patients and their families, gathering information on the patient’s needs, skills, interests, and limitations to develop and implement the treatment plan.
- Plan, organize, direct, and implement activities within the treatment program to facilitate patient progress toward treatment goals.
- Design and implement activity programs, including therapeutic leisure skills, leisure education, and leisure awareness.
- Facilitate and lead activity sessions to improve patients' mental and physical well-being.
- Instruct patients in activities and techniques such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation techniques tailored to their needs.
- Develop and execute treatment plans with activity interventions that address patient needs and interests, aiding in the achievement of treatment goals.
- Engage patients in therapeutic activities like exercise, games, and community outings.
- Assist patients in learning social skills necessary for independence.
- Modify activities to meet the needs of specific groups.
- Maintain a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude towards patients at all times. Address and work to resolve patient complaints when needs are not met. Prioritize patient safety.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or a related field required.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- At least three years of experience in recreation within a healthcare setting, with knowledge of the patient population served by the facility, required.
- Previous experience in healthcare recreation is preferred.
LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or in the process of obtaining national certification; or certified in a relevant specialty (Art, Dance, Music, etc.), or hold a clinical professional license (LCPC, LPC, etc.) with certification in expressive therapy required.
- CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certification required (training available upon hire and provided by the facility).
- First aid certification may be required based on state or facility requirements.
