Qualifications

Job Description

• Teach a variety of foundation drawing-related courses, such as Drawing, 2D Design, Watercolor, Painting, Illustration, and/or Digital Art, that support the Studio Art transfer degree, serving a diverse student population with varying levels of prior experience and artistic background.
• Develop and deliver engaging, well-structured curricula that build students' technical skills, visual literacy, and conceptual understanding while encouraging experimentation and personal artistic growth.
• Provide students with constructive, individualized feedback through critiques, demonstrations, and one-on-one instruction to help them refine their craft and develop a professional portfolio.
• Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that welcomes students of all backgrounds, skill levels, and creative interests, while maintaining high standards of academic rigor.
• Stay current with evolving practices, materials, and technologies in drawing and related studio art disciplines, incorporating relevant trends and tools into coursework as appropriate.
• Guide students in understanding the historical and contemporary context of drawing and related media, connecting foundational techniques to broader movements in art and design.
• Collaborate with Art Department colleagues on curriculum development, assessment, and program planning to ensure course offerings align with the goals of the Studio Art transfer degree.
• Support students in preparing for successful transfer to four-year institutions and/or careers in art, design, and related creative fields.
• Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.
• Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
• Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.
• Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.
• Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.
• Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.
• Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
• Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.
• Work cooperatively with staff and students.
• Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications

Desirable Qualifications

• Record of professional artistic practice, including exhibitions, commissions, publications, or other recognized creative activities.
• Five years of college-level teaching experience in studio art, with an emphasis in drawing, 2D design, watercolor, and/or illustration.
• Experience creating equitable and inclusive learning environments that promote success for all students, effectively engage diverse student populations, and address issues of equity, inclusion, diversity, and representation within the art program.
• Experience in curriculum development, departmental service, and collaborative projects within an academic environment.
• Knowledge of traditional, contemporary, and emerging art practices, processes, and technologies, with the ability to integrate these approaches into studio instruction.
• Commitment to student academic, artistic, and professional development through mentorship, critique, portfolio development, and transfer preparation.

Working Conditions

Salary Range: $87,573 - $131,428 Annually
