POSITION SUMMARY: The Art Instructor assists in the creation and maintenance of a Learning Center site for youth. He/She will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide remedial, basic and enrichment group instruction to youth using computers and other resources.
- Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering and art history.
- Know and apply elements of design and modern principles of art.
- Create art curriculum for students K-12 grade.
- Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for NHA and community.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
- Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
- Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings.
- Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools.
- Ensure that the Learning Center functions smoothly and reliably.
- Ensure the safety and security of personnel and computer equipment.
- Assist in record keeping of attendance, activities, and participation.
- Conduct routine assessments of Learning Center participants.
RELATED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Center Lead Coordinator as required.
- Attend and participate in meetings as required.
- Assist on various projects as requested by Creative Arts Coordinator and Administration.
- Work with students to build up submissions for calendar.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and other management as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to work with a wide variety of families and children from different backgrounds.
- Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports as needed.
- Ability to work independently.
- Basic knowledge of computers and peripheral equipment.
- At least 2 years experience with basic software, i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and graphics.
- Experience in and interest in working with diverse populations of children in a learning environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts minimum.
- Two years' work experience as an Art Instructor.
- Computer proficiency is desirable.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be bondable.
- Possession of a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator's license is preferred.
