Job summary

Hearst Magazines is seeking an Art Director for Cosmopolitan and Seventeen in New York, NY. You will shape visual identities across print, digital, social, video, and live experiences, leading editorial design and branding across multiple platforms.

The role requires 6+ years in consumer editorial design, advanced Adobe CC skills, and a strong collaboration mindset. This hybrid position requires four days in the NYC office with opportunities to influence high-profile brands.

Qualifications

  • 6 years of experience in consumer editorial design across digital and print.
  • Expertise in editorial design, typography, branding, and visual storytelling.
  • Proven ability to develop brand identity systems and cohesive visual languages.
  • Strong conceptual thinking and attention to detail with polished work.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration across editorial, creative, and production teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Bridge.
  • This position is based in New York, NY with a hybrid schedule four days per week in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Creative Director to develop and evolve the visual identity, creative vision, and design standards for Cosmopolitan and Seventeen across print, digital, social, video, and experiential platforms.
  • Design compelling editorial layouts, feature packages, celebrity profiles, and special projects that elevate storytelling through sophisticated typography, imagery, and visual direction.
  • Create impactful graphics, logos, branding assets, and creative collateral for websites, social media, video series, live events, and other cross-platform initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with editors, writers, photographers, video producers, social teams, and special projects partners to concept and execute innovative creative solutions.
  • Help define, document, and improve creative workflows and design processes that ensure consistency, efficiency, and high-quality execution across teams.
  • Commission and art direct freelance illustrators and creative contributors while maintaining brand standards and editorial excellence.
  • Oversee image selection, color approval, and photo retouching direction in partnership with digital imaging specialists to ensure exceptional visual quality.
  • Consistently deliver thoughtful, high-impact creative work while balancing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced editorial environment.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing polished, high-quality work.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to build strong partnerships across editorial, creative, and production teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Bridge.
  • Strong knowledge of magazine design, photography, illustration, color management, and production workflows.
  • Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment while managing multiple projects with creativity and precision.
  • Experience identifying opportunities to improve creative processes and streamline workflows.
  • This position is based in New York, NY and follows a hybrid schedule requiring four days per week in the office.

The base salary range for this role is $101,000--$122,000 . This position is not eligible for bonus or commission compensation. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
