Job summary

Pocahontas County Schools seeks a qualified Art/CTE Long-term Substitute at Green Bank Elementary Middle School. The incumbent will provide high-quality instruction aligned with state standards and support students’ academic and social development.

POSITION: Art/CTE Long-term Substitute

LOCATION: Green Bank Elementary Middle School

CLASSIFICATION: Professional

REPORTS TO: Head Principal

EVALUATION: Evaluations conducted as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310 and PCBOE Policy 3220.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

CONTRACT: Long-term Substitute Assignment

SALARY: Based on experience and education level per Pocahontas County Schools salary schedule. See pocahontascountyschoolswv.sites.thrillshare.com for pay scales and benefits information.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon Board approval for the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year. This assignment will terminate when a regularly employed teacher returns, when a regular employee is hired to fill the position, or at the end of the 2026-2027 school year, whichever occurs first.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1:

"Long-term substitute" means a substitute employee who fills a position for more than thirty consecutive instructional days, regardless of whether the position is vacant or the regular employee is absent.

"Classroom teacher" means a professional educator who has a direct instructional or counseling relationship with students and who spends the majority of his or her time in that capacity.

The long-term substitute teacher responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student achievement and growth in the content area. The teacher develops and delivers standards-based instruction aligned with the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards, creates and maintains a safe and engaging learning environment, and supports students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The teacher may be assigned to teach courses consistent with the employee's certification and the instructional needs of Pocahontas County Schools.

The long-term substitute performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants with recent unsatisfactory evaluations, documented performance deficiencies, or a history of unsatisfactory job performance will not be considered eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Planning and Preparation
  • Demonstrating Knowledge: Demonstrates current and thorough knowledge of assigned content, curriculum, instructional best practices, and applicable state standards. Understands how students learn and develops instruction appropriate to various developmental levels.
  • Designing Instruction: Develops and implements engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, student engagement, and the application of learning. Selects appropriate instructional resources, technology, and learning experiences to support student achievement.
  • Assessing Student Learning: Designs and implements formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives. Uses assessment data to monitor progress, provide feedback, and inform instructional decisions.
  • Understanding Students: Demonstrates knowledge of students' individual strengths, interests, learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and academic needs to provide differentiated, individualized, and specially designed instruction that promotes access, engagement, and achievement for all learners. Uses appropriate accommodations, modifications, interventions, and supports to address identified student needs.
Classroom Environment
  • Creating a Respectful Culture: Establishes positive relationships with students and creates a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment conducive to academic success and scientific exploration.
  • Managing Student Behavior: Maintains clear expectations and procedures that promote responsible behavior, student engagement, and a productive learning environment.
  • Organizing the Learning Environment: Maintains an organized classroom environment that supports learning, ensures accessibility of materials, and complies with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ensuring Safety: Implements and enforces appropriate safety procedures consistent with district, state, and federal guidelines.
Instruction
  • Engaging Students in Learning: Utilizes a variety of evidence-based instructional strategies, learning experiences, and appropriate technologies to engage students in meaningful learning.
  • Communicating Clearly: Provides accurate, coherent, and effective instruction with clear expectations and directions. Uses questioning, discussion, and active listening techniques to support student understanding.
  • Providing Timely Feedback: Offers specific, constructive, and timely feedback to students regarding academic performance and progress toward learning goals.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: Adjusts instructional methods, pacing, and resources to meet student needs and respond to assessment results and classroom dynamics.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Reflecting on Teaching: Continuously evaluates instructional effectiveness and student outcomes to improve teaching practices and student achievement.
  • Collaborating with Colleagues: Works cooperatively with administrators, teachers, counselors, interventionists, special education personnel, and other staff to support student success and school improvement initiatives.
  • Communicating with Families: Maintains regular, professional communication with parents and guardians regarding academic progress, student needs, and classroom activities.
  • Participating in the School Community: Contributes positively to the school culture through attendance at meetings, participation in committees, supervision duties, extracurricular activities, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Demonstrating Professionalism: Adheres to West Virginia Code, WVBE policies, county policies, ethical standards, and professional expectations. Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and sound professional judgment.
  • Engaging in Professional Development: Participates in ongoing professional learning to maintain content knowledge, instructional effectiveness, technology skills, and awareness of current educational research and practices.
  • Supporting Student Success: Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to implement accommodations, interventions, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 plans, behavioral supports, and other student services as appropriate. Monitors student progress and maintains documentation necessary to support student achievement and compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Implementing Individualized Supports: Implements accommodations, modifications, goals, services, and supports as outlined in students' IEPs, Section 504 plans, and other educational plans. Collaborates with special education personnel, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervising Students: Provides appropriate supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional periods, school activities, field experiences, and other assigned settings to promote student safety and well-being.
  • Contributing to Student Activities: Supports student engagement through participation in extracurricular activities, student organizations, academic competitions, and other school-sponsored programs as assigned.
  • Performing Assigned Responsibilities: Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or designee in support of the educational mission of Pocahontas County Schools.
