Job Description

The Criminal Defense Practice has an immediate opening for an Arraignment Paralegal. The Paralegal will provide arraignment coverage in the Bronx Criminal Court, Tuesday from 9 am to 5 pm and Wednesday through Saturday from 5 pm to 1 am or whenever the shift is completed.

Criminal Defense Practice is the primary public defender in New York City, providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 200,000 people facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gather client information for attorneys in the courthouse
  • Interact with clients and assist their families with case-related information
  • Access court records and assist attorneys
  • Record case information manually or electronically
  • Conduct criminal history and conflicts checks following protocol
  • Prepare written and electronic reports summarizing collected information
  • Obtain and copy court and office files
  • Assemble court files and materials for attorneys
  • Serve as liaison between attorneys and clients
  • Scan and upload criminal court files into LAS databases
  • Generate reports from various databases
  • Update court calendars
  • Manage office filings and case files
  • Provide general information to clients, families, vendors, and staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications:

  • High school diploma / GED or at least 2 years of work experience
  • Experience or commitment to advocating for low-income populations is preferred
  • One year of experience in a legal or relevant environment (paid or unpaid)
  • Fluency in a second language common to our client population is preferred
  • Relevant college work or paralegal training is a plus
  • Ability to work in office, courtroom, and field settings
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient in computer and word processing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to multitask

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range is $53,295 – $81,795, based on experience and qualifications. The Legal Aid Society offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance.
