Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital as an Armed Public Safety Officer in the Safety Department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Join the hospital trusted by Chicago’s Southland, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, in this role as an Armed Public Safety Officer with our Public Safety department. This team fosters a safe and secure environment at our main medical campus and surrounding Family Care Centers. Here you will join an elite group of employees that operate with skill and tactfulness. Please note this role does require you to travel. Training for new hires will take place at our main medical campus in Harvey and then you will work across any of our 24/7 sites as coverage needs arise. Be aware the role is physically demanding and works outdoors in all weather conditions.

Under general supervision, the Armed Public SafetyOfficer provides and maintains a safe environment for employees, patients, visitors, and medical staff through the use of uniformed patrols, emergency response, customer service and enforcement of policies and regulations at all Ingalls facilities. This is an armed position.

The incumbent assuming this position may be subjected to the following work conditions: extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid conditions and loud noise. Hazards of the role include mechanical, electrical, chemical, biohazards, sharps, and radiation.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Respond to all emergency situations (fire, bomb threat, combative patient, armed subject, lockdown, etc.) on campus that require immediate attention in a safe and timely and take appropriate action to mitigate or eliminate risk
  • Conduct internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds for persons needing assistance, safety violations, and evidence of criminal or suspicious activity
  • Ensure security sensitive areas of the facility are properly secured
  • Assists with enforcement of Ingalls policies and procedures, including but not limited to: access control, identification badges, parking, smoking and fire safety
  • Investigate and document safety hazards or criminal incidents that occur
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance for all protected health information (PHI)
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and fire service personnel responding to the campus
  • Complete written incident reports for any incidents requiring written documentation with all reports completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain understanding of Dispatch operations and provide Dispatch relief as needed.
  • Conduct searches of persons and property for contraband when necessary
  • Provide transportation for patients, visitors and staff to and from their vehicles when requested
  • Collect, inventory and secure patient belongings as required
  • Maintain duty posts in the Emergency Department areas and assist clinical staff when requested
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience and Training:

  • 1-2 years of experience in a public safety position (public safety / security officer, police officer, firefighter / EMT) or comparable military service preferred

Knowledge:

  • Microsoft Office applications
  • Ten-Codes
  • Excellent communicate skills to provide service in a friendly, calm, professional manner to all internal and external customers in situations which may be stressful, tense and ambiguous.
  • Good command of the English language to file and compose paperwork.

License and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Valid Illinois Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) Card
  • State of Illinois 40-Hour Armed Security Officer Certification (Semi-Automatic firearm)
  • State of Illinois Firearm Control Card (issued after hire and upon arrival from State of Illinois)
  • CPR Certification
  • CPI Certification (completed upon hire)
  • Must obtain IAHSS Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer within six months of appointment.
  • Must complete required FEMA ICS 100 and 200 level courses within six months of appointment.

Position Details:

  • Job Type/FTE: 1.00 FTE
  • Unit/Department: Security
  • CBA Code: Non-Union
  • Shift: 12 hr, Two week rotating schedule; 6:00am-630pm and 6:00pm-6:30am.
    • The position will require you to work as a uniformed Public Safety Officer, in order to supplement Public Safety staff on all shifts, as needed. Rotating shifts may be required to address staffing needs of the 24/7 department. Also, the deployment of rotating staff will take place at all Family Care Centers. Training for this role will be conducted in Harvey, where you will receive preparation and guidance. Following training, you will then be assigned to your designated facility.

Must comply with Ingalls Memorial Hospital's COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process. This is in addition to your compliance with the Flu Vaccination requirement as well. Medical and religious exemptions will be considered consistent with applicable law. Lastly, a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check are also required for all employees prior to hire.

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
