Lawrence Technological University is seeking an Armed Campus Safety Officer (Full Time) to protect students, faculty, staff and visitors. The role includes patrolling, responding to emergencies, providing escorts, and maintaining security systems on campus.

SUMMARY

The Armed Campus Safety Officer is dedicated to providing a safe campus environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.Armed Campus Safety Officers perform numerous duties to assist in the security of the entire campus community. The responsibilities of an Armed Campus Safety Officer are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University’s mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.This position non-sworn.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

• Act as a first responder to all emergencies on campus to protect life and property.
• Provide great customer service. Strive to exceed the needs of University, students, faculty, staff and visitors.
• Demonstrate and promote the values of the University.
• Visibly patrol campus on both foot and in a marked vehicle.
• Observe, identify, and report suspicious person(s) and/or situations.
• Complete detailed and accurate written communications, including incident reports.
• Ensure that unauthorized persons leave the university when warranted.
• Perform escorts for students, faculty and/or staff when requested.
• Provide security at special events, functions and/or for dignitaries.
• Report safety concerns involving buildings, structures, yards and parking lots.
• Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as, but not limited to, card access systems (ProWatch), Closed Circuit Television (NUUO), and Emergency Notification (RAVE).
• Provide First Aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use an Automatic External

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS and SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

• The Armed Campus Safety Officer will have been a member of a local, state or federal law enforcement agency as a sworn law enforcement officer.
• Served as a local, state or federal law enforcement officer and separated from service in good standing.
• Must pass a background investigation, to include criminal history and driving record.
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement and common sense appropriate to related circumstance.
• Must possess the ability to understand the Use of Force continuum and the use of deadly force.
• Demonstrate the ability to properly assess and take action in a life-threatening situation.Possess the ability to appropriately discharge a firearm in a life-threatening situation.
• Comply with Campus Safety department policy in situations involving the use of deadly force.
• Demonstrate proficiency on the MCOLES Course of Fire for Active law Enforcement Officers as mandated by the department.
• Must be able to work an irregular schedule, with no set days off. Duty shifts may include working days, afternoons and/or midnights. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be required to work additional hours during peak times. May be required to work mandatory overtime as determined by the operating needs of the Department.

MANDATORY DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED

A letter or certificate stating that you are a graduate of an approved Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) and/or local or state police academy.

A letter of recommendation from the previous Police Chief or Command Officer indicating that you served as a local, state or federal law enforcement officer and separated from service in good standing.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent minimum; preference given for an Associates/Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in criminal justice, police science, public administration, political science or similar or graduation from a Military Police Academy. Additional considerations given for certifications held in defensive tactics, firearms instructor, CPR or EMT.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must have the ability to read and comprehend written documents such as Rules and Regulations, Policies and Procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals and technical instructions. Must also have the ability to compose and produce reports and correspondence that are grammatically correct using appropriate language in a clear, concise and factual manner.

Must have the ability to speak, comprehend and be able to be understood clearly when speaking. Must be able to communicate both in person and while using communications equipment, such as a telephone and/or portable radio. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively while under stress.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to tell time and to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Must demonstrate sound judgement and problem solving skills.

Display the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions based on available information.

Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, which transcend diverse audiences. Must have the ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate decorum.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. While performing the duties and responsibilities of this position, a Campus Safety Officer is regularly required to see, hear, taste and smell. Frequently required to stand, walk, go up and down stairs, bend over, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, sit, patrol in vehicles, and use their hands.

Must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to work independently without direct supervision. Must be service oriented. Ability to have an exceptional customer service attitude at all times. Broad knowledge of college policies and procedures including specialized knowledge of faculty, staff, and student issues.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those one may encounter while performing the duties and responsibilities of this position. While performing the duties of this job, a Campus Safety Officer is regularly required to work in outdoor weather conditions. The employee may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, and may have to work in extreme heat and/or extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing in this position one may work in outside weather conditions, in vehicles, offices, empty buildings, under-lighted hallways, darkness, in crowds of people, in vehicular traffic, during hours of daylight and darkness and may be required to perform under extreme

emotional conditions. May occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to automobile related petrochemical fumes.

A Campus Safety Officer may be subject to unpleasant, hostile, mentally unstable, intoxicated, aggressive or threatening persons who have the potential to become agitated, physically assaultive, verbally abusive, and may use profane language or gestures.
