Job summary

The Firefighter (Driver-Operator) role on Ascension Island supports a full-service fire department serving an ICAO Category 8 airfield. You will operate ARFF and other firefighting vehicles, respond to aircraft incidents, and participate in airfield and structural emergency response duties.

The schedule is 48 hours on, 48 hours off, with on-base living facilities and training as part of a tight-knit, multicultural team.

Qualifications

• Education: One-year specialized experience in fire service or firefighting.
• Certifications: DoD/IFSAC/ProBoard-compliant firefighting and ARFF certifications.
• Experience: Ability to follow directions and perform duties of aviation fire service.
• Other Requirements: Pass medical examinations and meet DoD DoDI 6055.06 etc.
• Skills and Technology Used: English literacy; fire apparatus operation and safety.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, water tankers, and ARFF vehicles.
• Drive to the scene of the fire following a predetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary and positions vehicle.
• Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment.
• Perform crash/rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling predominantly large or complex aircraft.
• Perform standby duty during aircraft refueling and defueling, engine maintenance and testing, welding and burning on fueled and/or armed aircraft, ammunition handling, or other special circumstances.
• Direct water through turrets and handlines to cool weapons and ammunitions during rescue.
• Operate or deactivate specialized mechanisms and systems, such as hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, or oxygen supply systems.
• Perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes.
• Perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems.
• Participates in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants.
• Maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.
