Job summary

Airgas, Inc. is seeking an Area Safety Manager to lead field safety initiatives across the Eastern Region. You will coach drivers and service technicians, oversee regulatory compliance, and drive a proactive safety culture.

Ideal candidates bring Hazmat experience, travel readiness (50-70%), and strong skills in interpreting complex regulations while coordinating with HQ and field teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years in safety, risk management, or compliance with Hazmat exposure.
  • Must have valid driver's license and travel 50%-70% of the time.
  • Residence within Eastern Time Zone preferred.
  • Proficient with Google Workspace.
  • Able to interpret complex regulations and draft reports under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field safety coaching and driver training across the Eastern Region; facilitate onboarding and HQ liaison.
  • Interpret and enforce DOT/OSHA/EPA/FDA/Hazmat policies; conduct audits and maintain audit-ready records.
  • Respond to incidents, perform root-cause analyses, and monitor risk using driver safety data.

  • Pay range: $80k-$90k with an additional 10% annual bonus

The Area Safety Manager plays a critical role in developing, implementing, and supporting the company's safety and regulatory compliance initiatives across field operations. Serving as a trusted safety partner and coach, this role works directly with service technicians, drivers, and Area Managers within Airgas National Carbonation specializing in CO2 to reduce injuries, mitigate vehicular accidents, and foster a proactive safety culture.

The ideal candidate brings strong regulatory knowledge (DOT, OSHA, EPA, FDA, Hazmat), hands‑on coaching capability, and the agility to navigate compressed deadlines and high‑stress situations.

What You'll Do:
1. Field Leadership & Driver Coaching
  • Travel extensively across your Eastern Region territory to build strong working relationships with AreaBev Managers and Service Technician Managers.
  • Partner with Area AreaBev Managers to address safety deficiencies on the spot and coach drivers on safe habits for up to 100 drivers and service technicians.
  • Travel to Charlotte, NC quarterly to facilitate onboarding, lead driver safety training sessions, and connect with HQ leadership.
  • Design dynamic training materials that resonate with field teams.
2. Regulatory Compliance & Auditing
  • Interpret and enforce complex policies across DOT, OSHA, EPA, FDA, and Hazmat regulations.
  • Conduct comprehensive field audits to verify required documentation, safety gear, and operational compliance.
  • Identify gaps in existing safety protocols and collaborate with the Director of Safety to refine procedures.
  • Manage accurate, audit‑ready training records and regulatory filings.
3. Incident Response & Risk Mitigation
  • Respond swiftly to field incidents, manage thorough root‑cause investigations, and present actionable findings (utilizing tools like TapRoot). 24/7 availability by phone is required.
  • Oversee injury management cases end‑to‑end to support employee recovery and safe return‑to‑work.
  • Monitor driver behavior software and camera data to proactively mitigate risk before accidents occur.

Required Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum 2+ years of experience in safety, risk management, or compliance, with direct exposure to Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) distribution. (Entry‑level candidates with strong foundational knowledge and high aptitude are also encouraged to apply).
  • Licensure & Travel: Valid driver's license and the ability/willingness to travel 50%-70% of the time.
  • Geography: Must reside within the Eastern Time Zone.
  • Technical Skills: Strong working proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Keep).
  • Communication & Resilience: Demonstrated ability to interpret complex regulations, draft clear reports, resolve field conflicts, and communicate effectively under high‑pressure situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (or equivalent military experience).
  • Certifications: Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or other recognized safety credentials.
  • Driving Credentials: Active Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or commercial driving experience.
  • Safe Driving / Investigation Programs: Certified in or experienced with Smith System (or similar safe‑driving programs) and TapRoot root‑cause analysis.
  • Operational Software Experience: Prior experience using Intelex, Samsara / Lytx (driver safety camera platforms), Geotab (ELD), TenStreet, or SAP Concur.
