Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care – North Liberty Campus is seeking an Area Mechanic to oversee operation of buildings and equipment in the assigned area. The role covers inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems and facilities to ensure occupant comfort and reliability.

Responsibilities include safety, regular inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance across electrical, steam, plumbing, and HVAC systems, plus collaboration with other shops and training of apprentices.

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electricity, maintenance of steam and mechanical equipment.
• Four years of work experience in the listed crafts, including apprenticeship or technical training.

Responsibilities

• Applies safety precautions when working with electrical, steam, or mechanical equipment.
• Performs inspections of electrical, mechanical, steam and plumbing equipment to determine operating efficiency and locate malfunctions.
• Troubleshoots and repairs malfunctions on electrical equipment, appliances, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, heating, air conditioning and ventilation equipment controls.
• Performs preventive maintenance procedures on electrical, mechanical, plumbing and steam equipment.
• Checks completion of shop work orders and returns them to the appropriate office.
• Inspects and reports building problems in order to determine corrective methods.
• Maintains communications with personnel in assigned area and related shops.
• Maintains operating inventory of spare parts, filters, belts, and supplies.
• Trains shop apprentices, replacements, and other personnel.
